Repurpose an old household item to organize your bowls and lids

It seems everyone has a problem with lids. You know those plastic tops that always seem to be some place else when you need one and then you waste time looking everywhere but the ones you find don’t fit. After a while you get so "flusterated" you just rip off a piece of tin-foil and use it instead. But if you are like me you know that lid is among all those plastic bowls and loose lids so it stays on your mind until you just have to look again.

Sound familiar? I thought so.

So I am going to tell you how to solve your problem. You may laugh when you hear what I did to keep those plastic lids in a place where I can reach them anytime I need one.

I was throwing out some old stuff I haven’t used in a while and run across a wire CD holder, the old kind that we used years ago.; not the newer, stand-up kind but the flat one that holds about 10 or 12 CD’s. I threw it in the trash box, walked away,  then all of a sudden the light over my head came on, you know the one you see in cartoons and here on Factoidz, when someone gets a bright idea? Yeah, I got a bright idea for a new use for that old CD holder.

I went back and took that CD holder into the kitchen; washed it, dried it and started sliding those loose lids into the slots. They fit perfectly.

In fact it worked so well I went searching for more of these old CD racks.  After a few days of looking for them in the stores and not finding the ones I needed I got another bright idea, try looking for them in  thrift stores. Well woulden’t you know it, they had dozens of these holders and they were so inexpensive I bought two  more.

The clerk looked at me kind of funny when I went to pay for them. I guess my little smirky smile made her wonder what I was up to. I must say  I was feeling smart so I just had to tell her what I was going to do with them. Her eyes widened and she said "Oh, what a great idea, I will have to get some to put my lids in."

I went straight home and dug out the rest of my plastic lids, reorganized my bowls and placed the lids in the holders right there next to the bowls.

I can now reach into the cabinet and find any bowl and the right size lid in just a few seconds.

You can  upgrade your lid holder to one that can be screwed to the inside of the cabinet door using the old CD holders that were made to display them on the wall. They can be found in most thrift stores and they come in handy for other things you want to be able to get to, like pot and pan lids. Just snip out a wire or two until the slots are the right size.

So next time you start to throw away something, stop and think about what other use that item can be repurposed for.  You may never have to throw away another item for months…

Great recycling idea Shirley, I've not thought of this. A few years ago after getting a dishwasher I was cleaning off the cabinet and started to throw away the dish drainer and then thought, this would be good for storing all the larger bowl lids in the cabinets. So, now I use that dish drainer in the cabinet to hold larger bowl lids, the cutting boards and the no-splatter utensils that cover the frying pans while cooking. This I have found to be most helpful to me and the larger lids. I like this idea for the smaller lids. Thanks
