How to personalize your gift wrapping

Give a homemade gift that's meaningful, not expensive

This holiday season, consider a different type of gift wrapping for the special people in your life. It’s very unique and allows you to personalize the package to suit the person receiving the gift. Here is the basic information that will help you create this special wrapping:

First, purchase a roll of “butcher paper” (brown or white, thin and coarse, it often comes in a roll varying in both width and weight.) You can find this paper in your local craft or paper supply store. Next, measure out the size of the paper to fit the gift you are wrapping. Then, wrap the package as usual. Now comes the fun part! Here you can do a variety of different and interesting decorations.

Here are some of my favorites:

1. Use a colorful bow or ribbon and simply place this creatively on the plain brown or white package. Your gift will go from simple to special in just a short moment! Different styles and unique bows will help make this gift wrap idea fabulous.

2. Take out your favorite colored pencils or markers and draw right on the paper. You can put holly leaves, Christmas trees, or a menorah. Customizing is the key here! If can also just hand write the person’s name, thus creating your own ‘gift tags.’

3. Unleash your stamps on the gift wrap. Different colors and holiday shapes are fun for this! You can stamp all over, or in just a few areas, it all depends on the look you are going for.

I’m sure you can think of many more ways to make these gifts even more stylish and sophisticated. If you already own the ‘extra’ products, such as ribbon, stamps or markers, just think of all the money you will save with this gift wrapping idea! Also, if you’ve really touched a person and they are moved by your artwork, they can even keep a piece of the paper and have it framed for a keepsake. Now that’s a great way to become a permanent part of their holidays and every day lives. In addition, once you purchase the butcher paper, chances are you won’t go through the entire roll this holiday season, allowing you to save money for other gift-giving times in the year ahead (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, etc.)

Good luck and happy crafting!
