Starting a business later in life is possible; when you have the determination to succeed, nothing can stand in your way. Sure, there may be various types of businesses that you can buy your way into–however, in some cases you do not have to spend a dime to make money while working from home on your computer.
I will not go into statistics; however, I will just say that for the most part, we fit into those statistics in one pigeonhole or another. As adults starting later in life we also face a lot of challenges in addition to those of younger age groups, although these challenges will vary from one individual to another. Whether the challenges we face are financial, medical or family responsibilities or any other, as older adults we have already proven our worth for many years while serving others and padding our employer’s wallet more amply than our own. We know that we are worth so much more simply for the experience and skills we have already acquired through study and hard work. Having confidence, determination, motivation, and ambition as well as having clarity of focus and a creative passion all come into play when you decide you want to start a business.
Surely, I cannot answer for anyone other than myself; however, I do believe in you as well. If you want to make something happen, you already know you have to commit to the work it will take to make the dream of starting a business later in life a reality in your life. Regardless of your age, if you want to succeed with your own business, you must do the hard work that is required of you to generate the type of income you desire as well as the freedom to do so. Perhaps, for the older crowd this is a bit more easily or not, depending on your level of experience and your sense of "do-it-ivness". One of the most essential factors of having your own business is the ability to complete what you start. When you are able to focus and finish anything you start, you already have a good sound foothold in the reality of running your own business.
- Getting Started
Before you can begin, you have to have a concrete idea for a new business. You may already know exactly what you do best or you may want to search online to determine what type of business is best suited for you. You will need to determine what you have to offer others; perhaps you may offer the same type of services as others, or you may have something extra-special and completely unique and different to offer your prospective clients. However, once you have determined what it is that you do best or the type of business you want to start, it is best to draw up your formal business plan. You can do this yourself, hire someone to do it for you or perhaps you can find someone to help you do this at no charge. You must then find out if you need any type of business license or are required to pay any other taxes in your area as well as determine whether you need to insure your business. Depending on the type of business you choose to start, you may or may not need financing for your business. If you live in the United States you should locate your nearest Small Business Association or SBA to find out a great deal more about starting your own business, you may even be able to find the financing you need to accomplish this task as well.
Finding a dependable mentor can also be helpful, since you can learn from them the various issues that can aid you to become successful, since your mentor already has the experience of starting and running their own business, which can be worthwhile to you and your learning experience while you build your business.
While considering the financing of starting a business later in life, you may already have what you need to begin in savings; you may wish to talk with the loan officer at your bank; or you may be eligible for grants and other assistance. Then again, you may wish to sell or auction off some of those goodies you have stored away and do not have a use for any more. The point here is to look around at what you can work with. If you have been dealing with a bank for years and are a good customer, you may be able to get financing from them with no problems at all since they know your record of accomplishment for credits and debits.
Personal Drive and Determination Can Lead to Success!
Now, I am going to tell you, if I can do it, you can do it too, and here is the reason why. When I started I had no knowledge of business plans; to be quite honest, they still confuse me, but I have also been so busy that I have not had the time to sit and consider my own business plan. My natural and instinctive business plan is to work to make money to save up to buy my children and me a home of our own.
I can tell you that if you have a love and talent for reading and writing as well as the determination of heart, soul, body and mind, with the aid of a computer and a dependable online connection, you can find your niche and then take off with your new business venture. It will take time and dedicated effort. Although, you may read and find that having a quiet, secluded work area is most productive. I can tell you that if you have a real purpose, creative drive and are committed to make starting a business later in life a success, you can even work while living in a small trailer in the land of Hurricane Katrina, with nine to thirteen other people running circles around you, while hollering and screaming for your attention or needing something from you. This is why I figure, if I can do it, you can do it as well.
