The absolute best way to prevent dehydration after drinking is to consume a lot of water. You don’t have to start this consumption the morning after when you wake up with a pounding head and that horrible dry mouth. In my own personal experience and from what I have gathered from a little bit of research, I have discovered that your chances of prevention are greater if you hit the water before you hit the bottle. Drink a few glasses before you start to consume alcohol and, if you really want to help yourself out, drink water in between drinks of alcohol. This will keep you hydrated and it will also slow down your drinking speed, giving your body more time to process the alcohol which will help keep the dehydration down and help out with hangovers. Since a lot of the pain and discomfort associated with hangovers comes along with the dehydration, if you manage to keep your body hydrated you are killing two birds with one stone.
Another tip is to stay away from caffeine while you are drinking. Caffeine will dehydrate your body the same as alcohol will so if you are one of those people who like to use a soft drink like Coke to chase down your alcohol you might want to reconsider. Try something like Sprite or Seven Up. You still get the benefits of having a chaser but these soft drinks have no caffeine so they won’t contribute to the problem. I believe Root Beer is also caffeine free. If you find yourself with a hangover the next morning don’t drink coffee or the soft drinks containing caffeine because these will do more harm than good. Many times our bodies try to help us out after a night of drinking. I have often found that when I wake up with a hangover the first thing I want is a tall glass of ice water. I am not normally a water drinker but that craving hits me every time. I have also found that when I have tried to drink a soft drink at moments like those I can’t. It literally turns my stomach. I am a huge coffee drinker but I also can’t stomach even my favorite beverage after a rough night. In that way, I think my body tries to tell me what it needs.
In the end, water is really your only friend in this task. If you are like me and you are not all together fond of water, just imagine the benefits of the beverage in the long run. You will be less likely to wake up feeling as if your body has been ran over by a Mack truck, you might actually be able to eat something for breakfast because your stomach may not be upset, and you’ll be able to lift your head off of the pillow no matter how bright the room is that you wake up in. So you get the fun without the pain. If you like water, you should have no problems. I hope this helped.
