Staying up-to-date in the fashion world and looking good does not need to send you to the poor house. There are many options available to help reduce your clothing budget. You are probably familiar with outlet malls, consignment shops, online discount venues, end of season sales, clearance racks in department or discount stores.
What if I told you that you could dress from head –to-toe for $20 or less? It’s true! It can be done by shopping at thrift stores. The thrift store is often an overlooked jewel that is fast becoming a trend. Thrift stores my favorite places to shop because usually I can walk away from the store with 4 or 5 matching or coordinating outfits paying under $25 for all. What a fashion bargain
Thrift stores:
- Usually are very economical
- Offer a wide selection of clothing including top fashion name brands (Ann Taylor, Levi, etc.). Many of these items are new or gently used.
- A place to find accessories, jewelry and other items that will help you add to or build your business, casual or evening wardrobe. All for less than what you would pay in most discount or department stores.
Not only can you find bargains at thrift stores, but your wardrobe will scream I spent mega bucks. Sh-h-h you and I know better! You only paid a fraction of the retail price. If you select items carefully, no one will ever know you shop at the thrift store; unless you want to share the secret.
Unlike department stores, some thrift stores do not have dressing rooms or some items may not have size tags. To help ensure a good fit you will need to dress appropriately for trying on garments. Wear something snug, comfortable but not too tight or bulky. Leggings, stretch pants or form fitting activewear are examples. No sweatshirts or loose fitting t-shirts if you are looking for tops, shirts or blouses. Shopping for bottoms—skip the loose-fitting sweat pants or baggy jeans or slacks. Wear slip on shoes if you are shopping for shoes. If you choose to wear bulky clothing or if you feel an inexpensive shopping trip coming on; always keep a copy of your up- to- date body measurements and a tape measure in your glove compartment. Stay prepared for thrift store shopping, because you never know what you are going to find.
Thrift store shopping requires patience, creativity and not much money. This is one shopping venue where you may need to coordinate an outfit rather than find a matching one. Sometimes, a jacket may become separated from the matching slacks or skirt. On several occasions I have found suits because I took the time to search for the matching jacket or skirt.
Because thrift store clothing are usually gently used, sold ‘as is” and cannot be returned (though some stores will give a store credit) there are certain details you should check for before you make that fashion purchase. Remember you want quality, fashion and discount prices. Below are a few tips that will help you get the most for your money and select the best quality garment:
√ Examine hems for tears & loose threads. If you can repair the item it may be worth the price
√ Make sure the zipper moves freely up & down and is not broken.
√ Examine the garment closely for any discolorations (Especially the shoulder &
underarm areas)
√ Be sure there are no stains that are difficult to remove. Some deodorant stains can easily be removed
√ Examine all seams on lining & main construction of the garment for tears or dry rot
√ Check for any missing embellishments (buttons, appliques, etc). If you know how to sew on a button you can easily change buttons on a garment.
√ Check for extra buttons on the inside of coats or blouses
√ Always try on the garment to check fit & style (especially if tag is missing)
√ Read care tag, if available. When you purchase clothing that requires dry cleaning consider the cost
√ Look for classics; pieces that are timeless and not trendy.
√ Check sweaters and other knits for pulls, “pillings”, etc.
√ Visit often because the selection is always changing
