Like 90% of the male population is yelling “No! Don’t cut your hair!” I don’t know what it is with guys and long hair, they’re just obsessed. However, I know from experience that I’ve cut my hair and had them go “Oh, wow, you were right.” There’s just something about a women who looks coiffed, confident and polished that kicks the crap out of the whole Rapunzel thing. And don’t worry about your femininity - that isn’t summed up in a mane full of locks, but in how you rock the look.
- Choose a cut that flatters your face. I don’t know how good ANY woman looks with a buzz cut. Choose a cut that flatters your face. Go to a hairdresser you respect and ask their opinion. It’s their job, so they probably have a good idea of what will flatter you and what will make you look hideous. Listen to them, but don’t do anything you don’t feel comfortable. You don’t want to secretly resent them for the next few months while it grows out, when it was your own fault for letting them talk you into it.
- Wear earrings. If you weren’t in the habit before. But the good thing about earrings now that your hair is shorter, you can show them off to maximum advantage. Before I cut my hair, I had this enormous mass of hair. I got beautiful pearl earrings for Christmas, but nobody could see them under my bird’s nest. Now, they show off, and enhance my femininity.
- Play up your make up. I don’t mean, layer it on like a clown, but curl those lashes, bring out the pink blushing cheeks, apply some lipstick. You can’t hide behind the hair to look feminine anymore, so play up your best features. They’re going to be shown more prominently, which is good, so make them look great. The trick is minimal application to maximum advantage. I love a well made-up face with a short cut, going for that “pixie” style charm.
- Try using hair accessories. Barrettes, headbands, there are all kinds of cute accessories that can help accentuate your new hair. Plus, they won’t be lost - they really will be center stage.
Short hair in a woman can mean business, but all business and no fun is no good. So take your style and make it your own. Experiment with different ways of wearing it. The trick is finding balance in your look - the right amount of make up, accessories, and attitude. All I know is, no matter what your hair style, the sexiest accessory is always, always confidence. So walk with your head high and your back straight, knowing that no one can own your look quite like you.
