If you find yourself interested in purchasing a cheap treadmill but also find yourself on a restrictive budget without money to spare, you can avoid an expensive mistake by conducting some research and educating yourself about treadmills first.

In general, almost all treadmills are usually expensive, but you don’t want to only go for cheap models because they’ll likely stop working within two years, meaning that you’ll need to replace them, costing you even more money that you’d originally planned.

A cheap treadmill is usually one that will cost you less than $300, so that’s the price range to avoid when looking for a solid treadmill. Most of these treadmills will be manually operated, as opposed to the more expensive electric or motorized treadmill models.

A manual treadmill won’t have a button to turn it off or on; it only starts to move once you’ve gotten onto it and started running yourself, pushing and turning the treadmill with your own feet. Many people find this function difficult to use because it’s not easy to control the speed of the treadmill, and there’s a delay before you can really start your workout. If this kind of thing doesn’t seem to bother you, a cheap manual treadmill might just work great for you, but there are more drawbacks to this kind of cheap treadmill.

Cheap manual treadmills don’t let you change the degree of inclination while you’re running, and many times, you can’t change the inclination at all and you’re stuck at one level. If the cheap treadmill does allow you to change this setting, you’ll need to stop running and get underneath the machine to adjust the hinges to a higher inclination. A motorized or electric treadmill won’t make you stop running to chance the inclination, which means that your workout will be more consistent, fluid and diverse. Still, if even this process doesn’t get in the way of your regimen, cheap manual treadmill might still be what you’re looking for.

You should still be aware of the warranty on the cheap manual treadmill, as a lower price is usually directly proportional to a lowered expectation on how long the treadmill will last, as well as the stability of machine as a whole. This doesn’t apply in every situation, because there are a few excellent manual treadmills in production with longer life expectancies.

Knowing all of the slight drawbacks that come along with owning a manual treadmill and knowing how it functions, a cheap manual treadmill might work for your individual weight loss goals if you don’t need the fancy extra details like calorie counters and heart monitors that electric or motorized treadmills provide.
