Tools and Materials Needed:
- Ring-shanked nails
- Handheld metal shear or torch
- Hammer
- Work gloves
- Steel roof peak runners
- Steel roof panels
- Safety glasses
- Ladder
Step 1: Getting Started
Before beginning, be sure that safety glasses and work gloves are on. It is important to take these safety precautions so that injuries do not occur. Make sure that the ladder is placed securely where you will need it to start the job.
Getting started with the first panel is easy. Be sure to place it into the top corner of the roof to begin, making sure the ridges are pointing straight up and down so that water and snow drain off easily. Nail the panel down with ring-shanked nails and a hammer. Nails should be placed 2 feet apart and you should start by nailing into a low center section. Nail the edge side next, and then place the next panel under the ridge before nailing the other side. You will be nailing through two layers at this point.
Step 2: Nailing Down the Panels
Keep going using the method above until you are finished covering the roof with panels. If the last piece does not fit properly, cut it to fit with a torch or metal shears. Lay into place and secure all the way around with nails to complete this particular phase of the job. The panels are now installed and the roof is ready for the finishing touches.
Step 3: Installing the Peaks
Installing the peak runners is the next step. The nails should be hammered into place at 1 foot intervals along each peak of the roof.
Step 4: Check Your Work
Now is a good time to look over the panels and the peaks. Make sure that the nails have all been placed where required. If there are any places that need an extra nail, hammer them in at this time.
Steel roofing is a viable alternative to other types of roofing. It is faster and easier to install than many of the other options, such as shingles and tiles, and it is even more affordable when you do it yourself.
