So many theories, so little time. As we draw ever closer to the ominous end of the Mayan calendar it seems everyone has an opinion as to what it all means. Is the end of the calendar a signal that the world will end, or the world as we know it; is it a sign that some drastic change will take place, a shift in the collective consciousness or is all the hype just a focus of book sellers? To this and all other questions about dooms day 2012 I say: Yes.
2012ish, according to more than just the Mayan calendar comes up as a time of completion. The end time of a cosmic cycle, levels of understanding and the seven underworlds. All that aside, a simple look at headlines and studies about the condition of Mother Earth and her people will tell us, something is shifting.
Global warming, increases in natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions are some of the physical evidences that the planet is experiencing some kind of change. As to what extent and how serious it all is remains an issue for debate. Certainly we cannot argue with the melting of polar icecaps and the depletion of the Earths natural resources. So will the north and south poles melt and flood the world? Not if the switch positions first, according to some.
The evidence exists that the two poles of the earth have switched position before. According to scientists, it is not out of the question this could happen again, and according to their data and studies we are apparently overdue for a shift. But what could possibly cause something like that to occur and what would it mean?
While not etched in stone, it is known that around the approximate date the Mayan calendar ends (Dec. 21, 2012) a cosmic alignment will usher in that solstice. The center of the Suns gravitational pull, the gravitational center of our Galaxy, the Milky Way and the Earths center of gravity will reach a perfect alignment. The conjecture is this could cause the Earth to tip, though others believe it will have little to no effect on our planet.
Scientists also that target that time as the peek of solar flares, certainly predicting disruptions in our technology if nothing else. No one is predicting an outcome such as the one in the film Knowing, but having seen that movie one wonders if such a catastrophe is within the realm of possibility.
There are also the Spiritualist perspectives on 2012. Many believe the date does imply a new beginning, however it is felt that a shift in the collective consciousness is more likely. Followers of the Oneness movement for instance believe 2012 will usher in a realization of our unity. A quantum leap of sorts will occur bringing with it an age of peace, joy, harmony and the knowledge that we are all One and co-creators with the Universe.
Whatever 2012 is, we as spiritual human beings having this human experience have choices to make. Dooms day or no dooms day, perhaps the hype can be a catalyst for real change on the planet. Stepping into finding alternative sources of energy so that the depletion of what we have stops, taking care of the Earth and perhaps even beginning to thank and love her for supporting us for the last billion or so years, and taking a step toward putting down our weapons, walking away from disagreement and allowing an opening for true tolerance of all to grow. We must take care of Mother Earth and each other. Whether 12/21/12 signals the end or the beginning, we will soon find out; in the meantime perhaps the debates and thinking it has generated were the whole idea.
