The debate over brushing before or after a meal is a good question. Tradition, which is difficult to change, states brush after every meal. Good advise; however, with the discovery of biofilm brushing before a meal may be better.
The theory of brushing before eating is valid. Biofilm, a thin sticky layer of slime-like substance, as seen on slugs and “water ring” in flower vases, is responsible for the bacteria that harbors in our mouths. The first layer of biofilm is laid down by a specific type of bacteria before other bacteria’s can finish the job. Brushing AND Flossing, before a meal can disrupt the biofilm and give the food nothing to stick to. Therefore, food will not be in contact with the enamel or root surfaces of your teeth for extended periods of time.
How often you ingest food and the types of foods you eat is a better indicator of acid production and increased risk of decay. Whenever a food item is placed in your mouth the first stage of digestion begins. The oral ph falls below neutral (7) for twenty minutes. A rollercoaster action of the ph level in your mouth can cause increased decay,, or cavities in a tooth. The placement of your teeth in your jaw also has an effect on the level of decay. Ideal teeth alignment will allow natural cleansing of the teeth. Over lapped, or crowding, may cause food to become trapped and lie against the tooth surface.
Thoroughly brushing and flossing once in a twenty four hour period is satisifying the basic oral health need; Before or after a meal. Regular dental checkups and follow through on oral care recommendations by your health professional, dentist or dental hygienist, is best. Now, should I floss first or brush first?
