Hyperinflation has happened in third world countries, but could it happen in the great old USA? It’s where the government is printing so much money, it’s practically worthless, and to compensate businesses raise prices to reflect a real value product proposition, and the government has to raise the amount of denominations to cover the basic cost of living. If it sounds like an absurd economic phenomenon, that’s because there is an air of absurdity about it. Yet it’s real.
But will it happen in the US? Imagine going to the store to buy a loaf of bread and instead of paying $1.50, you have to pay $1500. That’s the fear mongering used by the big boys on Wall Street to shore up the price of Gold. You will please notice a rising correlation between the number of articles on hyperinflation and the pitches for investing in gold. It’s true, gold has risen in price dramatically over the past two decades, and you could have made more than a ton of money, perhaps two tons of cold hard cash by investing in gold. But would the cash be worthless if hyperinflation kicked in? Just kidding.
Even if you don’t agree with the economic policies being vomited out of Washington right now, I don’t see a situation where hyperinflation can occur, unless we’re presented with a dramatic disaster that suddenly knocks down to third world status. It’s just not realistic. But if you’re using psychology to scare people into giving you money for your hedge fund, it’s a great strategy. People respond out of fear and ignorance and never once say, “Hey, if it happened in Uganda, it could happen here.” Instead of saying impossible, I’ll just say it’s highly unlikely.
