Is Workplace Stress Always Bad?

How to gain control over daily stress

Workplace stress is an expected part of life for anybody. Any situation that requires any two individuals who are not identical in every way, to be productive together, is going to result in some level of workplace stress. But is workplace stress always a bad thing? Are there some aspects of it that might actually be beneficial to the company overall?

One of the biggest sources of workplace stress is when any one, or more, members of a given team don’t carry their own individual weight on the team. This obviously increases the demands on the other employees involved and should be recognized by management whenever it occurs.

We’re only going to be looking at some of the particulars in regards to this source of workplace stress today. The entirety of the topic could fill volumes of books by itself. No single publishing could contain all of the details and aspects of such a topic as human beings working together and the resulting workplace stress.

But even in such a case, where certain workers are truly being ’done wrong’ by the circumstances, any wise manager can turn it into an opportunity for growth, inter-dependence for the team, and an overall sense of ’team spirit’…not to mention how much more productive a happy team is.

How can a good manager turn this source of workplace stress into an opportunity as wonderful as all of that? Simple. Call it out in front of the team. If one employee is slacking, in spite of the fact that most people are acutely aware of their company’s expectations, then maybe a little bit of embarrassment might help. Cruelty isn’t needed here. A strong sense of humor can be helpful here too as most people who feel ‘exploited’ truly appreciate a leader who will offer them ‘vindication’ and amusement all at once.

While humor that’s particularly harassing might cause even the best of managers trouble, usually the worst case is that, the employee who’s been pointed out and embarrassed, to quit. They sometimes even ‘huff’ out the door in a big emotional show. Since the particular employee wasn’t part of the game plan anyway, this might actually bring some relief, and a second wind to the more loyal, productive employees.

Regardless of a person’s line of work, workplace stress is a normal part of the day-to-day functions, of any company, group, or organization. Most employees are well aware of that. The problem for most folks seems to stem from management’s inability, or unwillingness to, use the opportunity to show their team that, a good environment can be maintained as possible.

A great observation, Donald, and it certainly undermines the rest of the group. You have to be careful, since there may be underlying reasons among employees that contribute to one or more not being as productive as the rest of the group. In our career development, we worked through this common problem by having exercises - which I will eventually factoid, whereby the group is given a simulated experience, for example, of being in a life-threatening situation. The group is given certain data and told to plan their escape. Within this, the leaders and slackers come apparent very quickly - and gives way to conversation related to their actual work habits. It's very noninvasive and not publicy identifiable, but everyone knows who does what and offers solutions not only for the exercise but for the work ethic. It is very successful and drives the point home. I mean, to work. :) Marie

Hi

I was browsing the internet and by chance I came across your recent article on Stress at work.

I thought of getting in touch, since you and your readers may be interested in "Stillness Buddy", a software application I've launched in early August.

Stillness Buddy helps people to be more mindful of the present, feel calmer and at peace, while working at the computer.

It is ideal for people who are often tense and stressed and those who work for long periods without taking a moment of rest.

Stillness Buddy creates short "moments of stillness" and longer "mindfulness pauses", spread out during the day. These breaks are designed to be very brief, so that they don't interfere with work. Users can choose their duration and frequency, to suit their preferences and schedule.

By regularly practising the stillness and mindfulness exercises presented during the breaks, Stillness Buddy quickly and effectively helps to:

* Cultivate a deep sense of peace and stillness in every day life

* Work in a more mindful, alert and stress-free manner

* Be more relaxed, less tense

* Live more and more in the present moment

Stillness Buddy is for those of us who want to be more at peace and aware of the present moment, in the midst of our busy lives. It is suitable for people of all walks of life, regardless of their spiritual practice or religious background.

It has been praised by experts including renowned Taoist teacher Stephen Russell, also known as the Barefoot Doctor: "Stillness Buddy is a wonderful tool that will certainly help you become more conscious and more at peace in the midst of a busy day. Its gentle reminders and exercises are great devices for attaining and maintaining peace of mind in a fast-paced world.”

As well as by BBC2 radio presenter and author Janey Lee Grace: “For someone like me always chasing my tail, this is perfect. It brings back a feeling of centredness, quickly and effectively”.

You can find more about Stillness Buddy and download a 30-day free trial, at https://www.stillnessbuddy.com

If you like the application, would you be able to review it on your blog? In return, I'd be happy to provide you with a free, licensed copy of Stillness Buddy. I would also be glad to arrange a giveaway / competition of one user license for your readers.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Hector
