I have put together a few things that will enable you to make a better decision when choosing window coverings. There are different styles, colors, lengths, and hardware. I want to make the choice easier for you.
Measure the inside width of the window frame, or either the outside width of the wood frame. Hardware is usually meant to hang 2" on each side of the window frame. You should have 2-4 times more fabric width to give your window treatment a fuller look. Drapery panels are meant to be hung 4" above the window frame, or even with the ceiling. Shorter panels should hang 4" below your window sill.
Drapery panels come in different styles and colors; sheer and opaque. They usually measure 63", 84", and 96". The most common panels measure 84". You should always hang panels in even numbers, this gives your home an even look. Add two more panels per window to give them a fuller appearance. The most common panel styles are rod pocket, tab top, tie top and ring top.
Valances:
Blouson valance’s can be hung different ways. You may either stuff them or give them a tailored appearance.
Sheer valances are generally sold in 6 or eight yard lengths. The most common being 6. A scarf valance may be hung using a scone, decorative rod, or swag holder.
Sheers:
Sheers are made as panels, scarves, or valances. You can use sheers alone, or in addition to other window treatments.
Hardware:
Spring rods are meant for inside the window or door frame. This will allow you to avoid putting holes in your walls.
Decorative rods are available in wood and metal. Fenials decorate the ends of the rods.
Holdbacks are decorative hardware that holds draperies back to the sides of your windows.
Swag holders and scones are both used to hand scarf valances.
When you are trying to choose the perfect window coverings, be sure to take a color sample of an item you want to match. This will enable you to pick the proper color. You should also read the packages carefully to ensure you are getting the proper amount of panels. You should enjoy this experience, it should not be stressful. Remember you are trying to improve your area. You should get the items you want to look at on a daily basis. Do not be afraid to experiment a little, most places are glad to accept returns if the items do not work properly.
