Maximizing The Personal Finance Channel

Freelance Photography As A Startup Business: A Personal Finance Perspective

As the new moderator of the Personal Finance channel, I am looking for ways to make the most out of this channel for the Factoidz site and all people that use it.  Several ideas come immediately to mind:

1.  Personal Finance overlaps into many other channels, and anyone who would like to learn more about this topic or contribute to it from their own personal experience should ADD THIS CHANNEL, and by doing so become a community member.  The add channel feature is accessed from the home page of any channel, to add yourself to the Personal Finance channel go to its home page, factoidz.com/experts-in/personal-finance/ and then click on the phrase < add to my channels that comes right after the channel name at the top.  As a community member, you will get a weekly email update on this channel and all of its latest articles & discussions.  There may be other benefits in the future as well, but for now let’s grow this community!  Anyone in the following channels would be an obvious overlap:  Business, Frugal Living, Home Business, Investing, Self Help, and more!

2.  Now that you’re a community member, the next step is to be involved!  I am speaking only for myself, but I’m sure other authors on here will agree…the writing I see on here from others largely inspires my own writing.  It could be asking a question about a Personal Finance topic or situation, it could be writing a short answer or article that raises another question or related article, it could just be making a comment on a short answer or article…all of these things make your presence known and provide stimulation to the next person who comes along.  Other ways to get involved are voting when you see something you like, and recommending this channel, the community members, or the specific articles you see here to others (keep this link handy:  factoidz.com/experts-in/personal-finance/).  Any and all efforts are appreciated, this channel and this site are continuing to grow exponentially and we all have the ability to make this happen.

3.  The V.I.P Project* - I personally think Personal Finance is one of the most versatile channels on Factoidz in that knowledge gained here can be helpfully applied to almost any other channel, and likewise most knowledge in other areas can help with Personal Finance matters as well.  As a challenge and source of inspiration, I’m proposing that at least one article be written in the Personal Finance channel for every other channel that currently exists on Factoidz…giving these topics a Personal Finance perspective.  For example, writing a Personal Finance article about Business might involve discussing what personal financial factors should be in place before starting your own business, or why its helpful to think of your personal balance sheet as though it were a business balance sheet.  An article on Cars from a Personal Finance perspective might include different methods of purchasing/renting/leasing various types of vehicles and the impacts this can have on our overall financial health.  I am going to start this project myself, when you’re ready to join in either suggest ideas for these articles in discussion, or start writing them on your own!

*stands for Versatility In Personal Finance…I dropped the F to make it sound better, my prerogative :)

I’m looking forward to questions, feedback, and contributions from as many people who care to write them.  The topic of Personal Finance has been sorely neglected in our general education for too long, and this is an excellent opportunity to rectify that situation.

Congratulation Benjamin on becoming moderator of the Personal Finance Channel. Mike picked the right man for the job. I would like to invite you to write an article for my channel, The Photography Channel. Maybe you could give some of my readers who are thinking of opening a freelance photography business some pointers on getting financing, types of business structures they should consider, record keeping, etc. Let me know what you think about this idea. I would have voted your article up but I'm all out of votes for the day.

Hi, Personal Finance--Wedding Channel here: of course it's no secret that a wedding is a huge personal-finance challenge for the parties involved. Words of advice?

Hmm, well I have to tread carefully as this is a very emotionally charged topic :) I will be happy to research a little further and write an article for that channel, but meanwhile I can offer some information based on a personal experience my friend recently had. Party favors that are engraved with names and dates on them are most likely impossible to return if for some reason the event does not occur at the specified time (or in some cases, at all). It's not a very romantic notion, but since this is a highly emotional time for everyone, try to make financial decisions that can be reversed or otherwise altered if the need comes up.

Here's one problem all brides have--and I'm sure you don't want to go through the agony of looking at the tons of articles already written on how to save money, it's mostly obvious stuff anyway. But every "Wedding Guide" or "Wedding Checklist" always starts out with, as the very first thing: Establish a budget. So, how is that possible for most brides when they don't have a clue how much each component (venue, D.J., food, booze, flowers, etc.) they're going to need--along with considering wants vs. needs? How to establish a budget when everything is a question-mark. FYI as of August 2008, an "average" American wedding was down $6,000, to $21,000+ from the end of 2007. Some ammunition/food for thought.

I think that's a very good point Clairsie. Similar to creating a household budget, where you could live on filet mignon and rare wines every night or take the ramen noodle route, you need to base your wedding budget on your personal financial needs. I am motivated now, financial juices are flowing...I'll write an article about this :)
