Barely two weeks after Michael Jackson’s death, he is still selling records. A resurgence of his popularity has begun: partly because everyone was shocked by his untimely death, partly due to people wanting to own a piece of history before it costs more than a mortgage, and definitely because his music is still popular. Some people want to own a CD or DVD before turntables are no longer available (the day is coming), some want to remember their younger days, some young people are just now discovering his musical and video legacy.
Michael Jackson definitely changed the pop music culture and made numerous humanitarian efforts that made real differences in the lives of millions of people. He is an icon, the world’s first billionaire entertainer, simply…the King of Pop. No matter what derogatory comments are made by individuals or in the press, he is now a historical figure.
So…you want to own a piece of Michael’s music? Target, Wal-Mart, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon all have some of his records available online. Most of them sold out their current stock within one week of his death. However, new copies are either being procured or pressed at the time of this writing and all sites will be shipping stock in early August…so don’t despair if you didn’t order anything yet.
The easiest to obtain are "Number Ones", "HIStory: Past, Present and Future Book I", and "Dangerous", and “Live in Bucharest” (full live concert). The music is available on CD and DVD, with some videos of these albums are available, too. Most of the sites mentioned above have a retail pricing between $8 and $10…right now. If you are looking for some of the older albums, be prepared to spend time searching craigslist.org and get ready to PAY. Those willing to part with some of his older work that is not really still sitting on store shelves are ready to gouge prospective buyers.
Other websites that might have albums include eBay and Bidz.com. Good luck bidding against others that want the older stuff. It’s interesting to check these sites just to monitor the bidding wars!
His books, Moonwalk (autobiography) has been seen listed as low as $400. and as high as $800 and A Song for You, (his book of poems and essays) is available for $12 on Target.com. If you are looking for Moonwalk and you’re not rich, try getting on the list at your local library. There are Collector and Commemorative issues of Time, Life, and Rolling Stone magazines coming out soon that can be pre-ordered through Amazon.com for under $20.
Michael Jackson also appeared in movies: The Wiz available for $12), the rarer Captain EO and Ghosts available here with other titles available–all at $8. Plus $5. Shipping); Moonwalker (available for $15).
To those that didn’t understand Michael, he will remain an oddity…to those who cherished him, he will remain a sweet human being with outstanding talent. Clearly, he will remain alive in pop culture forever and many people will miss his innovative mind and interesting fashion that still inspire today’s musicians.
