OIL PAINTING: Applying Paint or the Method.
During the previous notes and lessons I have looked at Body Colour, Glazing.
Washes, Blending, and Impasto. Most of the others on my list you probably will use very much and are self explanatory with the exception of Scumbling. This is the use of surface brush strokes over another colour using a fairly dry, stiff brush. It will allow the under colour to glow through almost like a glaze. It can also be used to soften edges and linked with teasing (working into existing paint to give additional texture). Normally you could only use this technique over dry or semi dry paint or you would find yourself in the realms of blending rather than working onto or into the surface. This example of a “Beach scene in Norfolk” uses Scumbling. The primed hardboard allows rapid drying of the first layers of paint and therefore allows one to Scumble fairly quickly after the application of your foundation layers.
