There are so many different towels to choose from. There are different materiels, thicknesses, and designs. I had problems with this until I started working in retail a few years ago. I wanted to help others decide which towel is best for them. I have completed some research, and put together the descriptions of different towels and terminology to assist you in your decision.
Pima Cotton:
Pima cotton is an American version of the great Egyptian Cotton. It has a slightly shorter staple than the Egyptian cotton, but is as soft and silky to the touch. These towels are made of 100% American grown Pima Cotton.
Egyptian Cotton:
A fine, long staple cotton that is grown in the Nile Valley in Egypt. Long staple cottons are more expensive than other cottons.
Microfiber Towel:
Microfiber towels are typically made using thinly spun polyester fibers, which make the towels quite a bit more absorbent than others.
Combing:
Combing separates the long, desirable fibers of the same length, from the short immature stock. This also removes all foreign matter from fiber stock. Only the best grades of fibers can be combed. (This is actually my personal favorite)
Jacquard:
A jacquard towel is a towel in which colored yarn is woven into the towel to create a design. It will create a design on both sides of the towel.
Carding:
Carding is a process in which the fibers are brushes up. This makes the fibers more or less parallel. This process eliminates a considerable portion of foreign matters removed. No fiber twists are applied in this process.
Dobby:
Dobby i a decorative design woven into a fabric in regular pattern.
Low Twist:
Low twist is premier fibers with low twist yarn, and is exceptionally soft.
You should never use fabric softeners on your towels. It actually coats the towels, and prevents them from absorbing. Always wash towels separate, never with items than can snag the fibers. To keep your towels soft, and static free, use a tennis ball. Place in the dryer with your towels.
I hope this information can assist you with your towel choice and care.
