Pit bulls and the bad rap they get

How to raise and train a Pit Bull

Don’t bully my breed. The american pit bull terrior was the most popular family dog during the first part of the 20th century. The wrong people realized this breed is extremely loyal and eager to please. According to the American Canine Temperament Testing Association, 82.5%of the American Pit Bull Terriers that took the temperament test passed, compared to a 77% passing rate for all breeds on average. In the test a dog is placed in a series of confrontational situations. The first sign of aggression or panic is a failure of the test. Pit Bulls have achieved the fourth highest passing rate of all 122 breeds tested.

It is estimated that there are 60,000 Pit Bulls in the City of Chicago alone. This number is so high because people are breeding them for the wrong reasons. Most of them are living in hostile surroundings. It is an amazing testimony to the breed that although 95% of these animals suffer abuse/neglect, we rarely hear of any problems.Dog fighting is the number one abuse towards animals in an urban environment. This is why when you watch Animal Precinct on Animal Planet , almost every arrest made involves cruelty towards pit bulls.

The American pit bull terrior is an outstanding companion dog-intelligence, loyal, courage and trainability. It is not right to access a dog based on appearance, pedigree or history. When my husband presented a puppy to our family 11 yrs ago I though how cute. Then I found out it was pit bull mind you this was a 9 week old puppy I said get it out of the house we will not have one of those people/animal eating animals. There was alot of fighting and pleading I had a 4yr old and 7yr old at the time. Between the kids and my husband I lost. The dog stayed and it was one of the best decisions that was ever made in our household.

It’s been 11yrs and I love this dog. He is every positive thing a pet could be. I would never own another breed. You have to put the time and effort into these dogs but the results are tremendous. My dog’s name is virtue and he’s white and brown. I don’t believe in cropping the ears or cutting the tail. So he has floppy ears and big hangy lips. He’s adorable although when I walk him I’ve had people go to the other side of the street because they think he looks scary. This amuses me and I laugh.

If your looking to get a dog give a pit a chance. There are so many of these unwanted dogs in pounds. Now with so much awareness of the prejudice against these dogs there are places that will help with training and making sure you have success with your new pit bull.

I totally agree that this bread is grossly misrepresented, and a deep prejudice for the word Pits' in general. I have a pit now, and he has a temperament, but no more than any dog that is provoked. If trained to control their temperament, they can be great with kids. They also can be trained (provoking their temperament), & they will become very aggressive.

There are several running loose here, not mine. However, they are sweet gentle and good with the kids, great watch dogs, even if they aren't mine, but again, gentle in nature. Although, sometimes they can get a little scary, but their just in protect mode at that time... Just depends how you raise them. I have heard of folks down here feeding them gun powder to make them mean. Stupid people I think. Great article!

Hi thomas, I totally agree with you. These breeds can be trained to be aggressive. I appreciate your comment. I feel strongly about this issue. What type of pit do you have (color, female/male ect..)?

Hi Sara, Loose pit bulls would make me a little nervous but you say their sweet and gentle so thats good. There's no better alarm system in your home than a dog. Another reason why I love my dog. Your right than cam be scary especially if your not used to them. I look at my dog and I think he looks like scooby doo lol. My husband used to say "thats because you don't see the pit in him anymore, He looks like a pit". It was a joke in our home. thanks for your comment and I'm glad you liked the article.

Hello again Irene...My pit is actually an A.K.C. registered (American Kennel Club) American Staffordshire Terrier. His name is Hank(named after Hank Williams Jr & Sr) I recently saw a picture of him (spiting image of), on the cover of some magazine pertaining to an articles about Michael Vick(former ATL Falcons QB) He just got out of jail for his involvement with organized gambling on dog fights. Hank is perfectly marked tan & white. He's just one of the family. I've got to keep him in check because he gets jealous if he's not getting all of the attention. He'll plop himself on you thinking he is still a puppy, but he is almost 4 now.

We have a pure bred pitbull, and I have to say he is just an old goof. My poodle was the one to watch out for, ironically. Thanks for this article on a very controversial topic:) Sincerely, Kerry
