Political Reasons for why the American Colonies Broke Away from Britain

The American colonial revolution was deemed inevitable by many historians and students alike, but there is another scenario which is not even considered by many people which is: Was the colonial revolution inevitable or was it a result of bad governing by the British?

There is much evidence to support the theory of British governing being the reason for the revolution from political sources, and in this reading it will be analyzed to support that viewpoint. From a political standpoint, there are three important pieces of evidence which will be discussed; these are the Intolerable Acts, the negligence of the parliament, and the Proclamation of 1763. The Intolerable Acts were a series of acts which the colonists thought were completely outrageous. These acts said that soldiers were able to sleep in the houses of colonists and use their properties. The acts also said that Boston Harbor would be closed and it was, then it was filled with more British warships.

The third piece of evidence, the Proclamation of 1763, angered the colonists very much. The reason for this being that the colonists had fought in the French and Indian Wars for seven years for the territory the French had owned. After the war was won, the British government decided not to let anyone past the Appalachian Mountains, the exact area which the colonists really wanted for expansion. This made them horribly angry because the lost lives for seven years to not receive anything at all. These had increased the colonist’s anger towards Britain and moved them closer to the revolution. The revolution could have averted had these acts not been implemented because the colonists would not be nearly as angry about British politics.

One last political factor is thought to have affected the revolution and that is the colonists not having a member of parliament to represent them. This made it so the colonists had absolutely no control over what laws and acts were passed upon the colonies and when the colonists requested a spot in the British parliament, their request was denied and they took it upon themselves to add to their hatred of the British, which was once again brought on by a bad decision by the government. I hope that this article helps very, very much with your studying of American history and maybe you can reference research to it because I worked very hard on it.
