Politics seems to be a topic everyone is afraid to talk about, especially with others. Yet, there are so many political junkies that cannot get enough of it. All we have to do is look at MSNBC or Fox News. They present politics twenty four hours a day all seven days of the week.
America has just survived another presidential election. It seems as though each one becomes more and more nasty. We have a House and Senate that treat each other worse than elementary school children. There is name calling, slander, disrespect and a myriad of other insults. It is as though the two parties live in separate nations.
What has happened? What happened to the time when the government was of the people, by the people, for the people? Now it seems as though they are only for the people that will re elect them. How can America survive this time of hate and negativity? This kind of behavior can only lead to destruction. These are the times when man needs to go back and read the history books. No country can survive much less grow when the two governing parties are out to destroy each other.
In March of 2008, Barack Obama gave a speech where he spoke about the necessity of brothers loving brothers and sisters loving sisters. Let us look at these words. It sounds much like, “love your neighbor as yourself.” Could this work in politics? Perhaps this could be a new start for a new millennial.
What if the two parties cared more about the good of the entire country rather than his or her own little part of the state represented? What if the FBI, CIA, IRS, Army, Navy, etc. all cared more about the good of the entire nation, rather than his or her personal organization? What if the President, House, and Senate, worked and did not even worry about re election? What if their only intention was to serve the people who elected them?
What if our government officials voted for the good of the country and were not concerned about party lines? What if the middle class and poor really mattered? What if the military was cared for after they were injured? So far, we have many what ifs. However, the time has come to look at what we are doing. We are murdering the hopes and dreams of others as greed permeates the hearts and souls of our country. It is time to turn the page and begin to apply spiritual principles to our politics.
The time has come to change the way America does business. It cannot continue without empathy for those who are being choked by the system. We have had enough Enrons, mortgage crises, and Bernie Madoffs. Our world functions on the law of cause and effect. If you plant corn you will not get a crop of orchids. If we continue sending out such anger and hatred towards each other America will collapse as many of the empires before did. We will truly reap the crop we have planted.
Perhaps it is time to return to a spiritual source. Simply loving our neighbor as ourselves would cause us to turn the corner. Just imagine each of us on the planet loving our neighbor as ourselves this very instant. The moment this occurs we will experience peace on earth. What if?
