Before you decide to build a deck, you should make sure that you have the correct power tools to make the job go along smoothly. Although there are some power tools that you absolutely need, some tools will make the job easier and could be added to the list of tools needed to complete a deck. You can buy or rent most power tools that you will need to build a deck.

Circular Saw

The circular saw is used to cut the deck boards, deck poles and railings. The saw is has a circular blade that makes it easy to cut through the wood in a straight line. There are different types of circular saws that you can use such as the handheld saw, table saw or a radial arm saw.

Power Auger

The power auger is optional, put makes it easy to dig the holes for the deck poles that are placed about three to four feet in the ground to give the deck support. The power auger can be rented at a local equipment rental company. It appears to look like a ice drill, but works in reverse to bring the soil up and out of the hole as it drills the hole.

Jig Saw

The jig saw is used to cut the angles on the rail posts for the stair railings. It is easier to make the angled cuts with the jig saw than it is with the circular saw. This is a smaller, handheld saw with a thinner blade, and can make angled cuts or notches in the railing posts.

Drill

The drill will be used to drill pilot holes if you are using any wood screws to mount the wood on the deck. Attaching the border boards is done with screws and the drill will make the pilot holes so that you can screw in the screws easier. If the drill has screwdriver bits, you can use the drill for tightening the screws. You can use a cordless drill or an electric drill depending on what size drill you have. It should have enough power to do the entire deck.

Nail Gun

If you plan to nail down the deck boards, the nail gun will make the process faster. The nail gun will need the correct size nails and electricity to use on the deck. The nail gun can deliver as many as forty hits per second. This tool makes it easier for someone that just can’t use a hammer for long periods.
