Preparing for Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom teeth removal might not feel great at first, but once it’s done then most jaw or mouth problems should fade away. If you are like me, 26 years or older and you haven’t gotten them removed…you might want to do so, especially if your insurance covers a portion of it. I have no insurance so the cost for me was almost $2,000. I started to get a couple crooked front teeth in my teen years, but did not realize it was due to bad wisdom teeth.

When I had the x-ray done it showed all 4 of the wisdom teeth were impacted into the bone, which meant for me a longer time for recovery and a much higher cost per tooth. One tooth was double what the anesthesia was. Anyway, this article is about how to prepare for wisdom teeth removal.

It’s pretty easy. So listen well and you can save extra money for getting them removed!

First off if you still have your wisdom teeth and you know they are causing you problems, then just go straight to the oral surgeon. Save yourself a couple hundred instead of visiting a regular dentist that will refer you to the oral surgeon. Especially if you are like millions of people without dental insurance, it’s rough.

Secondly, don’t wait till your in your 20s or 30s to get them removed, that makes it harder for your mouth to heal and like most people you should get them removed in your teens. That’s one thing I learned and my son will get that done in high school.

Now, the most obvious symptoms of a bad wisdom tooth is pain that comes off and on, it can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. The skin that covers the teeth will become inflammed and hurt when you eat or drink something. In some cases it can even cause your jaw to lock up or the joint the pop when you move your mouth. Also - note that you can have ear pain for severe wisdom tooth pressure.

the most often reason said today that wisdom teeth do not grow in properly is due to a small mouth. Once the teeth start pushing upward it causes the rest of the teeth to cram together, which causes ingrown or twisted teeth. This cannot be reversed unless you use braces to push those teeth back in place.

Now, let’s say it’s the day of the surgery. Be prepared by wearing comfortable, loose clothing, such as your pajamas. Believe me when I tell you if you are susceptible to pain then you will be fast asleep by the time you get home. Other than loose clothing you have no reason to worry about the surgery or extraction of your wisdom tooth. First thing they will do is check your vitals to be sure your high pressure isn’t high or too low as well as your heart beating too high due to being nervous. Then, they will inject the anesthesia into your arm where the vein is. It is very powerful and within seconds to 2 minutes you will be out like a lightbulb. It does depend on how petite or big you are for how long it will take.

Once you are knocked out they will do the tooth removal and then move you to the recovery room. There you will wake back up and most likely experience immense pain in your face, you might be unable to speak, very groggy and cranky. At this point, it would be a good idea to ask the doctor for medication to be shot in your mouth to help numb some of the pain.

That’s pretty much it. Up to 2 weeks later you will experience bleeding, some headaches, pain in your mouth and possibly a fever. One thing to remember not to do during the 2 weeks is do not drink out of a straw, as that can cause a water bubble to become trapped where the tooth used to be and will cause you severe pain. This will result in another visit to the oral surgeon where they will have to cut the skin open to remove the water. Also, do not eat food with grains! The grains can also become trapped under the skin and cause problems.

Some great food to consider during the recovery period would be soup, smoothies, soft foods, or pudding and jello as well as everyone’s favorite,  ice cream. Once the 2 weeks is up, you should no longer experience pain and can live a much happier life.
