If you have a puppy that is soon to begin to stop eating puppy food, or an older dog that is picky no matter what you put in his bowl, one question that most dog owners ask is whether dry or wet dog food is best. Wet food, the kind you buy in the can is somewhat different than the dry food found in a bag in kibble form. Like with most things in life, there are pros and cons of both wet and dry dog food. In the end, it all depends on what you want to pay, and what your dog enjoys eating.

Canned dog food is usually more appetizing to dogs, as it has a lot of flavor to it, like meat and gravy that make dogs drool for days it seems. Wet food is much easier for dogs to eat as it doesn’t require a lot of chewing, like kibbles do. Canned dog food, for some, is best, especially if they own a smaller dog with a small mouth. smaller dogs can sometimes have trouble chewing kibble, so wet food is usually prefered. But, there is dry food kibble made for even the tiniest of dogs.

At the same time, dry dog food is a great option as well because it keeps your dog’s teeth clean and exercises the dog’s jaw muscles. Dogs will always want something to chew on, especially puppies, and dry food provides just that. Dry dog food is said to promote better smelling breath as well. In the end, no matter which type of food you choose you choose, each type of dog food can give your dog all of the needed nutrients, and this is really what matters.

Usually when you go to a pet store, you see people with larger dogs buying big heavy bags of dog food and at the same time you may see someone with a much smaller dog grabbing a few cans of canned food. However, this is all preference. There is nothing that proves big dogs need kibbles, and smaller dogs need to eat wet softer food. Dry food can be made soft with a little bit of water, so there really is no main reason.

In the end, the debate between canned vs. dry dog food is somewhat useless. If you don’t want to pick between the two because you think each have their benefits, you can easily mix the two. Make half of your dog’s food wet and half of it dry. As long as it’s healthy and your dog enjoys it, there is definitely nothing to worry about!
