Reasons to avoid Hawaii as your next vacation destination

How to keep children from getting bored on summer vacation

When asked what their dream vacation would be, roughly 90% of Americans respond that Hawaii is the place for them.  As a former crew member aboard one of the larger cruise ships that tour the island, I can tell you first hand; It’s not worth it.

Before I go any further allow me to say that Hawaii is a lovely state.  If you’re wealthy, or if you have the excess money then go ahead and give the Aloha state a visit.  Just don’t plan on taking your pets with you.  There’s a six month quarantine.

For the average Joe to make this pilgrimage to the volcanic isles, one might have to save up their whole life.  The economy class plane ticket alone can cost as much as $900.  You have all of the normal tourism expenses, but since Hawaii is considered to be exotic you can expect to pay two to four times as much.  Things like car rental, and hotel expenses can become outrageous.

If its so expensive, you must be getting something amazing in return right?  Not always.  The only two things that the islands offer you (that can’t be found elsewhere for way cheaper) are the volcanoes, and the black sand beaches.  Black sand beaches are nice, but are they really worth the hike in price?  The volcanoes are pretty cool to look at, but they smell horrible.  Given the chance to see one again I’d prefer a picture.  That bad smell is sulfur…you’re breathing in sulfur.  I’m not sure about the health ramifications associated with breathing sulfur, but I can’t imagine its good.

So what should you take away from this little Factiod?  Go ahead and save up for Hawai’i, but then go on vacation somewhere else.  Florida offers lovely beaches and beautiful sunsets, Colorado, and Arizona offer you more natural beauty, and Vegas is more fun (even if you don’t like gambling).  My suggestion is that you call up friends or family that moved into other states and ask them about their favorite local attractions.  You may end up finding something better than an over rated island.  In fact…I’m sure you will.

Not True! As a former crewman on a large ship, I doubt that you actually had enough time to see the real Hawaii? Sounds more like sour grapes to me. There are thousands of things to do and see that cost nothing or very little money. Each Island is different and each has the most diverse areas you can imagine. Stunning Beauty abounds at every turn and when you get tired of exploring on land, head for the ocean for the best snorkeling, swimming, surfing, body boarding, kayaking and paddling you can imagine. In short, Hawaii has more to do and see than almost anywhere on earth. Don't let one persons sour view prevent you from enjoying one of the best places ever. Truly a Paradise for adventurers!

As a former crew-woman I was sure to take two weeks at the end of my tour to actually go see the islands. I didn't mean that Hawai'i isn't worth visiting. I say right in the article that if you have enough money you should do it. But why save up your whole life for one vacation when there are fantastic adventures to be had right here? (Possibly in your own backyard)! You could take a handful of week long trips for the price of one Hawai'i adventure. But with a username like "AlohaGlobal" I suppose we could expect you to back up whatever your travel agency is selling.

Hawaii is lovely. . .it's true that almost every continent offers scenic beaches that rival Hawaii's, but their culture and food is one that can't be experienced elsewhere. When I travel, I don't judge a vacation on whether it was "worth it" monetary wise, instead, I base it on the experience I had there and most importantly, what I learned about the local culture. Hawaii is rich and abundant with its own quirks and charms (like their fascination with spam!) and the islands themselves are brimming full of exotic wildlife and fauna that can't be found elsewhere. I'd recommend going to Hawaii at least once in your lifetime, and after the vacation's over, to judge for yourself whether or not you want to go back.

Oh Brother! Sounds like this poor Sap was a "Sea-sick Land-lubber." I've lived in Hawaii for over ten years on a tight budget! This "sour grapes" post sounds like the only thing they did was visit Waikiki... which is exactly why I added my comments about visiting other islands. This pitiful person sounds like they'd be much better off staying home with a remote control in theit hand. AND IF Hawaii were such a lousy Vacation destination, WHY do so many people return again and again and again? Sounds to me like this poor guy has so little "Aloha" in his heart, he'd be better off in Antarctica cuddling up to a penguin.

Again. Hawai'i is not lousy, just over priced. I once provided concierge services for a couple that had saved up their whole lives and went on the cruise as a retirement gift to themselves. How sad considering that the grossly overpriced plane ticket could've taken them on a handful of adventures instead of just one. So yes, maybe that coupled with several other experiences has left a bad taste in my mouth. With everyone out there claiming that Hawai'i is the pinnacle of travel destinations in the U.S. there ought to be one voice of sanity. There are other wonderful destinations to be visited, so don't waste your life saving up for a week long excursion. You might like it (you might love it) but there are many other places in this wonderful country for you to love as well. It sounds to me like two of you are snobs to the rest of the U.S. Mandarinmint is the only one who seems to be truly in love with the islands while the other two are preoccupiedwith bashing me instead of my point of view. So Mint, I'd like to thank you for your input. You other two can go suck on "sour grapes" together.
