If you’re reading this article, chances are you’re considering returning to school. Good for you! You have a dream, and you have the desire to reach it. These are the two most important keys to successfully returning to education, whether it be to get your GED or your Ph.D. Once you realize your path, then you will have the desire to attain it, because desire is where the ability lies.

Unfortunately, there is still an incredible fear of the unknown, even in your older age. For some, the fear is of the courseload. "How can I manage a full time job, supporting a family, AND a full time courseload?" For others, the anxiety lies in the environment. Going back to school in your 30’s, or 40’s, can be intimidating, knowing that you will be entering a classroom filled primarily with 18-22 year olds. There are several different ways to go about conquering these fears, and finding the inner strength and motivation to successfully achieve your goal.

"It Will Be Too Much Work"

Many employers in today’s America are incredibly supportive of their employees continuing education. More than that, many companies ENCOURAGE their workers to do so. There are even some companies that offer tuition reimbursement and cooperative education programs. To ease the nonstop juggle of family life, full time work, educational studies and assignments, and of course, get some much needed (and deserved) YOU time, try following a few of these tips:

Set realistic goals for yourself.  Don’t expect to do everything 24/7 and not crash. You have to be in a relaxed state of mind to accomplish this goal, or you will ultimately fail. This is meant to be a fulfilling experience for you; don’t waste it.

Get organized! Your time is about to get even more limited than it already is. Probably the best thing you can do is to prepare in advance. Get yourself and your family into a regular routine, so that everyone knows what their responsibilities are, and what is expected of them. Your family should be your biggest cheering section on this journey, and be more that willing to help take some of the weight of your daily responsibilities off your shoulders.

Also, try updating your technical knowledge. If you’re less than proficient on the computer, now’s the best time to learn! Also, many professors are asking that you E-mail your assignments nowadays. Most schools offer free training seminars for adult learners who need to gain confidence in these essential technological skills. Look into your school’s Student Technology Center to access the learning opportunities available to you.

"Everyone Will Be Younger Than Me"

First of all, know that you’re NOT alone! The Wall Street Journal reports a 7 percent increase across the country in people taking tests to get their diploma or GED. In some states, though, the GED isn’t worth much by itself, unless it’s used as a stepping stone to higher education. In addition, there has been an estimated 30% increase in the number of people returning to begin or complete their college education. The most commonly given reason was that they were responding to the suffering economy. The current economy has made it that a diploma, GED, or some sort of college experience really does matter. One possibility for increasing your comfort in beginning your educational journey is a newer concept, frequently referred to as "distance learning".  Basically, this is online schooling. Many different colleges and universities offer the luxury of digital classrooms, where you can continue your education from the comfort of your own home.

If you think old-fashioned sitting at a desk and learning is more your cup of tea, don’t worry! There’s still hope for you! Just remember that the focus is on the coursework, and nothing else. Try to get a seat at the head of the class, so that you will be actively engaged in any topics you wish. Usually whereever you sit on the first day will end up being your seat for the quarter or semester. Dress nice but casual, but try not to dress like an old man/woman!

If you’re still feeling anxious about this transition, try this age-old remedy - sit down and BREATHE! Believe me, you are making a terrific decision for yourself, and owe it to yourself to follow through with this goal! Good Luck!
