Roll Roofing: Is It Necessary To Use Underlayment? What Temperatures Is It Appropriate For?

Roll roofing is a popular choice because it’s so inexpensive. They are also much easier to install than a traditional roof. Roll roofing may not last as long as other roofing materials, but it’s a great alternative for many people. Here are a few tips that will help you in the process.

Temperature Concerns
Roll roofing can be more delicate than other materials. It’s best to install the roof when the roof when the temperature is above 45 degrees. If you must install it when it’s colder you will want to warm the roof rolls before you start.

Keep It Straight
The roll roof should be flat and straight when you install it. Roll roofing needs to be installed when it’s a little damp, if the rolls have dried or are curling you will want to correct this before you install it. You can simply cut sheets around 18 feet long and lay them on top of each other. In about an hour the cut pieces should be straight again.

Underlayment
While most manufacturers will tell you that an underlayment isn’t necessary under your roll roofing, it is a good idea to use anyhow. This will extend the life of the roll roof and add another layer of protection.

Roll roofing is a good option if you aren’t planning on being in your home long term, or if you want a cheap alternative to other roof methods. It’s easy to install as long as you follow a few simple tips.
