In the summer to come it is easy to forget that it is hot.  Considering what area of the world you live in heat will effect you in different ways.  Heat related illness is one of the leading killers in the summer months and reason for hospitalization.  You will not go a week without hearing about it.  Education is key to keep your self out of harms way here are some tips to stay safe.

Wear sun screen when expecting to be out side for long periods of time.  Sun burn is a stress on your body and enough of it will put you in enough pain to keep you in side for a very long time.  This summer the recommended SPF is 50.  Put it on every two hours or so.  Sade is preferred but is not always everywhere so sun screen should help.  Stay away from oils and lotions.

Drink lots and lots of water.  Hydration is key to keep from having a heat related illness.  When your dehydrated you body will use all of its resources to stay hydrated and when there are no more you get sick.  An 8 oz bottle of water and hour when out side will be effective.  Stay away from soda and alcohol when out doors for a long time.  These dehydrate you more because they have not nutritional value and move through the body faster.

Know your limitations with activities.  Most heat related incidents happen while someone is doing an activity.  If you feel that your weak stop get to a shaded area and get hydrated.  Everyone has limitations and to push them to far can mean a sever case of heat related illness such as stroke.

Have a emergency bracelet if needed.  If you have a pre-existing condition that may cause you to have a heat related illness you need to wear a med alert bracelet or necklaces.  In the case that you become unconscious a medical person will know what not to do or what special precautions to take.

Know that just because you came inside after being out side for a period of time does not mean that you cannot still get sick.  Sudden changes in body temperature can cause you to get nauseated, light headed, and may also cause fainting.  If this happens get to a safe sitting area and have someone get you a drink of water.

Ok I gave you some tips now I will give you the symptoms.  Remember they may include but are not limited to any on the list.

  • Fatigue, Nausea, Headaches, Excessive thirst, Muscle aches and cramps, Weakness, Confusion or anxiety, Drenching sweats, often accompanied by cold, clammy skin, Slowed or weakened heartbeat, dizziness, Fainting, and Agitation are all signs of heat exhaustion.
