Selling on EBay Successfully & Opening Your Own Store

Home Offices - Their Benefits & Challenges

I have long been a customer of EBay, but to be a seller scared the daylights out of me. I just decided one day to “take the plunge” and though it does have its low points, as with any store, I am now a very happy “Power Seller”. I am hoping to share all I know with you and get you started in the fun. It is actually so much easier than most people think. This is a good way to make money at home.

To get started it will be necessary to create an account, user name and profile, with eBay. You may eventually want to create a store name but to start, take it slow. Once you have your account with eBay, you will also need to create an account with PayPal. It takes just a few minutes and is the best secure site you can work with.

Once you have your accounts set up, you are now ready to sell. When you get to your account, on the top next to the “Buy Tab” is the “Sell Tab”. This will take you through the entire steps needed to list your first item. Don’t forget to have a price in mind for what you want to sell, investigate shipping costs, and take pictures of your item:  People will not want to buy what they cannot see. You will note also that you can list as an auction, starting with a low bid which leaves it open for bidders to keep bidding until the highest bidder wins at auction’ s end. You may also opt to list an item as a “Fixed Price”, the price you choose that you want for the item. That is listed as a “Buy It Now” so no matter how long the auctions lasts, a bidder does not have to wait for the auction’ s end in order to purchase a “Buy It Now”. I have noted also that listing fees (which I have not discussed as yet) are less on this form of listing. On the other hand, auctions seem to attract more buyers as it is a challenge for them to get the item and possibly at the best price.

I did mention fees. There are some fees for placing a listing, another when your item sells. Of course, eBay has to get their cut. In fact, so does PayPal. But there are no up-front costs for PayPal. A great asset for PayPal, also, is that you can create your shipping labels right from their site. Another great asset for listing your items is a site called auctiva.com.  I don’t know where I would be without it.  It used to be free, but now they charge a nominal fee per month. But there is so much you can do with Auctiva.  And they work in conjunction with eBay. They have hundreds of templates for you to use to make your listings look really nice on eBay, and they walk you through the whole process. You also get to upload photos very quickly and easily at no extra cost. A great site, great asset to you on eBay.

I have been taking a little hiatus from eBay these days except for my biggest seller which is Alli Orlistat Weight Loss Aid. I do anticipate adding quite a few items in the near future, especially with the holidays just around the corner. The first step in the listings is to take good photos, figure on a price, shipping costs, and write a good description of the item. Keep most of your listings to the point and you can also give them a little personal affect. People feel a little more at ease when they feel a little friendly connection with the seller, which makes it so much better for you, your rapport with them and the all important feedback you get at the end of the sale. I am happy to answer any questions I can. I hope this article is helpful and you will give it great ratings . . . and please recommend me. Good Luck.

On the other hand (and there always is one), eBay sales have slowed tremendously in the past few months. I've been a seller for 10 years or so, and weathered the ups and downs. My biggest recommendation as a seller is to find your own specialty -or you are likely to get lost in the crowd of thousands of other sellers. It looks like you have a specialty - a weight loss aid- but for those thinking they can sell a silver plate bowl or a Mikasa bowl, just by listing, please think again. EBay is a buyer's market right now, and will remain so for some time. Good luck to all eBayers!

Hi Susan! Thanks for the informative article. I've always wanted to try to sell things, but haven't done it. I do have a PayPal account - which is GREAT - because other seller sites have included it as a 'pay' feature and you don't have to repeat credit card #'1; just that first time. I have a college friend who sells all her books on ebay and gets all her book $$ back. College books get outdated quickly, so it's a win-win. I have gotten a few disappointments on ebay, but I have to say that my 'treasures' far outweigh them and the price is right. Good luck - the winter is coming and maybe traffic will increase.....Marie :)
