How to start a business later in life - the perspective of one work at home mom

Being a single mother of two growing children, I work from my home as a freelance writer. I’ve worked with an online production company on a Sci-Fi movie and mini-series that hopefully will be airing soon. I work as a staff writer for an online publishing company as well as spending a lot of my on and offline time composing original articles for an assortment of topics and subjects. I also work online rewriting articles for others to create fresh new content. I’m a quick and efficient human content spinner!

To be quite honest, the last time I had health insurance was as a military dependent and a minor. No doubt, that there was some type of coverage in effect while on a regular job, but other than that none at all.

I have checked into state Medicaid coverage. However, I do not qualify because we get $3.00 more from child support, than the ideal amount for single mother to obtain coverage with our state Medicaid coverage. What is a single mother to do in this day and time? The children have coverage, thank goodness.

The two children get on a good month about $368 in child support and have Medicaid coverage, which is a state funded insurance. But let me ask you this, how does it make sense that a single mother trying her best to make ends meet, works herself just silly and into exhaustion can be turned down over three dollars? I was blown away and so was the Medicaid worker. She told me that the calculations made no sense to her either.

Granted, I am healthy as a horse in many respects, however I could use some type of chiropractic health insurance because I suffer from old injuries either incurred by accidents or abuse that were never attended to as a child or as an adult.

I do not have any type of serious illnesses such as HIV, AIDS, heart disease, hemophilia, chemical dependencies and other conditions such as mental health issues, high blood pressure, diabetes or asthma. I am just a single mother who is healthy and in need of chiropractic care. Most of the other illnesses that I may come down with, I can treat at home, however I am not able to align a hip at home. I can treat colds, mild burns and stomachaches on my own and have no need of medical assistance with those types of things. However, it would be nice to know that if something did happen that as a mother I could get the medical attention I need in order to take care of my children and keep working to pay the bills.

My Ideal Medical Situation for Those Self Employed Individuals Who Need Insurance

First of all, I think we need to go back to an old fashion type of medical arena of those who do work in a medical field to realize that we are not all rich folks with a pocket full of money. Health insurance companies may be greedy for money and unrelenting in their efforts to shortchange those of us who cannot afford their ridiculous pricing, should consider other options. Why can’t they base the premiums of independent contractors on their income? They already know that they will be making more money on all of us than they will ever have to pay out. To me, it is just a greed market that takes unfair financial advantage of hard working people.

I do think it is great that there are state Medicaid plans for the children. However, how will the children be properly cared for when a single mother is in need of medical assistance and is unable to obtain it because the kids get $3 more a month on a good month than will qualify the mother of the children to continue in good health? If the mothers are down, how can anyone expect it not to influence the manner in which the children are cared for while the mother is in need of health insurance?

Ah, Sara, you are definitely a lady who thinks like me. There was a time, back in the days when I was just knee high to a grasshopper, when doctors were more concerned with giving all their patient quality care than they were concerned about the all mighty dollar. Today all they seem to care about is maintaining their beautiful offices, buying expensive homes and driving expensive cars. Thgis is really a sore spot for me because my wife has more serious medical conditions than Carter had Ltittle Liver Pills and needs the care of a whole squad of specialists and a few of them have refused to treat her because we had fallen a couple of months behind in our payments. Fortunately I'm as healthy as that proverbial old ox except for arthritis in my right knee and hips. Fortunately, since I have no health insurance, I can handle pain really well. As for child support, that shouldn't veven be a factor in the equation for determining a single mother's qualifications for receiving Medacare insurance.

How frustrating is that? They have cutoffs, but that is heart rending. I woman I know works part-time in a bank (there is a mandatory # of hrs) only for the health benefits provided. She has 4 kids and her husband's job does not provide insurance. Some doctors - you have to research - will charge you a lesser fee if you don't have insurance and even allow monthly payments. A lot of the charge has to cover insurance filing and admin costs, so they may be able to help you since you won't have that. A lot of people don't pay all their doctor bills, so agreeing to pay payments may work with some. You may also want to contact your local Family Services Division - they may have something to offer. I hope the pending new health care will provide for you. May God bless you and the kiddies with good health and happiness.

You got an excellent discussion going here Sara..Great job! Let's "buzz it up" even if we do this outside of the contest. This article was part of the campaign that you, Ngozi, Paul, Charlene, and I worked on. So, let's link it up and spread it 'round! Hey Ngozi...Why don't you rub it in a bit about how you people from UK don't have these kinds of problems. Go ahead, a little British bragging could make things better for US in the U.S.

I would never stoop so low as to mock the affliction of my American brothers and sisters. In United Kingdom, single mothers get free or heavily discounted healthcare including dental, optical and medical care. If you work and earn under a certain amount, are over 25, you ge working tax credits which is the government uses to top up those on low wages. If you have children, then you can get child tax credits as long as they are under 18. So its quite a good system except GB seems to have a stupid amount of young silly kids having kids...but hey...

I am so sorry to hear this. I hate to hear that any one does not have medical insurance. One small stay in the hospital can cause great financial hardship. I would contact an insurance broker if I was you and tell them to look for an inexpensive temporary insurance or an insurance meant for those who are self employed there are cheaper policies available even if you just get insurance that covers only major medical you will save yourself from financial ruin if you ever have to go in to the hospital for something. There are lesser expensive policies out there get in touch with an insurance broker who does not represent any one company and see what he or she can do for you. When my husband lost his job we were able to get a temporary policiy for the whole family for just over $200 per month, for a family of 5. Since your children are already covered they should be able to find you some kind inexpensive health inurance even if it is minimal or temporary, temporary policies can be renewed as well.

I feel the need to comment on this story. I share in alot of the same issues as you. Single mom of four, state insurance and child support. Funny how child support is never enough to take care of your kids. Yet, it always seems to be the reason you are found not approved for something you apply for in effort to make life easier. The state and all its laws, all I can say is GRRRRRRR!

Great article--I have a lot of respect for single mothers. You work four times as hard as anyone else. Like Paul, I would like some tips on supporting yourself as a freelance writer.

Thanks Josephine and Sharon, I appreciate that and am glad you enjoyed the article. I'll see about writing up an article about supporting yourself as a freelance writer, but I'm warning you now, when it comes to money and spending I am very conservative, although as a single mother that is an essential point as I'm sure some of you may already know. :)
