With any small business, you will have to disprove something many people believe. Many people believe small businesses are more expensive, and are not up to the standards of larger businesses. People have believed this for many years, and it can be true. Most people will not try a new small business, due to this belief. You have to find a way for your company to stand out to customers. Even if you have slightly higher prices, make them interested in trying your company.
The first thing you should consider, your company name. The name of your company should portray what you do. It should be very professional. It should also, in some way, explain what your business is. This will allow people to be drawn to your company. They will know what your business consists, and what services you may offer.
Do not rush into choosing a name. Sit down and write a few different possibilities on a note pad. Rate each of them from most preferred,to least preferred. The you will be able to make sure the names are not currently taken by another company. You should check business names in the order you have rated them. This will allow you to be sure you get one of your preferred names at the top of your list..
Now that you have the perfect name for your business, you should dress the part. This is very important. You are a company owner, dress as one. Professionalism is very important to any small business, if they are competing with larger companies. If you are introducing yourself to a potential customer, and do not appear professional. They may choose to go elsewhere. Even if you do construction, or landscaping. If you are meeting a client for the first time, dress professionally.
Any small business should be sure to have professional materials printed. This will give customers the appearance of a larger, well ran business. You should have a nice letter head, and business cards printed. These should include; your business name, address, phone number, and email address. You want your customers to be able to contact you at there convenience.
If you have a business that is in a building, spend the extra money for professional signs. Never opt for hand written signs. Hand written signs give any company a "CHEAP" appearance. This is not the reputation you are wanting to build for your company. Most signs can be purchased at any office store. If the sign you are needed is not available, have one printed for your location. It may cost you a bit more. These signs will give your business a more professional, and put together appearance.
Build a referral base. When you start getting the customers in the door, have them refer people they may know. This will be easily done, if you have satisfied the customers. You may also want to offer small incentives to your customers for referrals. If you offer a small incentive, and provide great work, customers will be glad to refer there friends and family.
Remember, you are now a business owner. Let people know about your company. Use every opportunity to promote yourself, and your business. Carry your business cards with you at all times. If anyone asks for you phone number, offer them a business card. You may also notice people that may be in need of your service. If you do , you will have a business card available to present to them. You will also be able to explain what your business is, and the services offered. This is a great personal touch for your company, and could possibly attracting more customers.
Staff your company properly. This pertains to all businesses, small and large. You want a staff that represents what you see in your company. Have employees that are positive, and have great knowledge of your company. You can train you employees about your companies costs, and they can help you reduce them in different areas. Train them, in detail, about the services you offer. They should have complete knowledge of your services. This will give them the ability to answer all questions that customers may ask. Be sure they have a positive attitude. This is especially true if they will be dealing with any of your customers.
Be patient and take your time in growing your company. A lot of companies tend to try growing very fast. I have notices business coming up around me. They will open a few locations, then a few months later, they are going out of business. Take your time and focus on your business. Do not try to overwhelm yourself, or your finances. You want to build a positive reputation before trying to add more expenses to your business.
A small business has great potential in the current markets. There are more individuals that are trying to find local business to deal with, so they may help there cities economy. Take advantage of this. Promote your self, and your business, in a positive manner. If you are able to build your reputation, you will have a larger chance of succeeding with your business.
