Well just what are Factoidz?
To gain a better understanding of what Factoidz is all about let’s break this down into two parts. First we can see what Wikipedia has to say about the word fact and oid.
A fact is a pragmatic truth, a statement that can, at least in theory, be checked and either confirmed or denied. Facts are often contrasted with opinions and beliefs, statements which are held to be true, but are not amenable to pragmatic confirmation or denial.
-oid is a suffix much used in the sciences and mathematics to indicate a "similarity, not necessarily exact, to something else". According to the Oxford English Dictionary, -oid is derived from the Latin suffix -oides taken from Greek and meaning "having the likeness of".
So if we put the definition of fact and oid together we come up with: having the likeness of a pragmatic truth. Then add the z to the end and you have more than one. But let’s see what Wikipedia has to say about factoid.
A factoid is a spurious—unverified, incorrect, or fabricated—statement formed and asserted as a fact, but with no veracity. The word appears in the Oxford English Dictionary as "something which becomes accepted as fact, although it may not be true.” However, the word can sometimes mean, instead, an insignificant but true piece of information.
Factoid was coined by Norman Mailer in his 1973 biography of Marilyn Monroe. Mailer described a factoid as "facts which have no existence before appearing in a magazine or newspaper", and created the word by combining the word fact and the ending -oid to mean "like a fact". The Washington Times described Mailer’s new word as referring to "something that looks like a fact, could be a fact, but in fact is not a fact".
Factoids may give rise to, or arise from, common misconceptions and urban legends.
So what are the authors of Factoidz being experts of on?
This must mean the writers of Factoidz are becoming experts on subjects that may not be completely true. Are Factoidz authors becoming the next writers of urban legends as Wikipedia states? Well how ever you view the articles on Factoidz they are all great and provide some very interesting thoughts, ideas or sometimes some actual facts.
The best part of Factoidz is having a great forum to get peoples writing out to the public sector, while earning additional income from it.
