Some ideas to get started in volunteering

Everyone wants to donate to charities. Is your heart bigger than your pocketbook? Even though we are currently in an economic crisis; we can still find simple and inexpensive ways to give back.

Go through your stuff and find things you either don’t use or want anymore: like clothing that doesn’t fit or you don’t wear anymore or maybe an old sofa or chair or table you no longer use. Many common things people will always want or need are: clothing, children’s toys, furniture, dishes, canned food and various other things. You can give clothing and just about anything to your local Goodwill, your local AMVETS, or any type of consignment shop or used clothing shop. Give food like canned goods and non-perishables to your local food bank or local soup kitchen. If you don’t have any canned food to spare, try to watch for large sales on canned goods at your local grocery store and buy a bunch at cheaper prices then to give to a charity.

The Hunger Site – www.thehungersite.com: I discovered this site a long time ago and ever since I try to remember to go to it everyday. At this website all you have to do to help give is click on a button, it’s FREE and EASY! At first, the website was only for hunger, but now it includes breast cancer, child health, literacy, rain forest and animal rescue. Click on each tab to click on each button for each specific charity. This site also offers many other ways to give back for free and if you do buy anything from them most of the money is donated to the charity and you usually get a free gift for purchasing from them too! There is one catch; unfortunately you can only click once a day on each charity, after the first click they don’t count it again coming from the same computer. You may ask how can I give something for free by just clicking on it. Well, the ads on the page and the sponsorships make it possible. For every click the sponsors pay a certain amount to each charity. So get clicking now! Sign up for their Remember to Click service and they’ll e-mail you a reminder every day. You’ll also get two free “Cultivate Peace” bracelets for signing up.

The Salvation Army: You can give airline miles, cars, clothing, furniture and other goods or volunteer your time.

        Convenient click-to-donate websites:

Volunteer: Giving your time is something you can easily give for free. Find something you want to give some of your time to and give back to your community. Volunteer at a homeless shelter, food bank, soup kitchen, read to children or help teach illiterate people how to read, deliver food to an elderly or shut-in person, pick up trash in a community clean-up effort.
