Stop drinking so much (plain) water!

Stop drinking so much water!

We all hear how important it is to drink at least 64 ounces of water per day. I’m not going to disagree. Taking in a lot of fluids, especially if you are very physically active, and more especially when you are active in hot weather, is definitely beneficial. Doing the opposite can be downright dangerous! But I want to give you tips on some interesting and flavorful ways to make all that fluid intake even more of a benefit.

Get some nutrients in that water! I like to start with tea, especially green tea. I make about 32 ozs. and then put it in the fridge. Now half of my day’s water supply is loaded with antioxidants. I add a little honey, corn syrup, or sugar to sweeten it. Stevia is a great substitute for sugar if you want to avoid any empty calories.

Next I mix in something else good, and nutritious. Orange juice is a good beverage. They even fortify some with calcium. It can be kind of acidic and syrupy too, so don’t drink it straight. Try adding 12 ounces to the tea, then water it down about another 12 ounces, and drink it cold. That will get you through the whole day!

For a super-anti-oxidant boost, I’ll take a cup of blueberries -It can be good to start out with frozen blueberries. Do the same thing with strawberries, or use both. Add a shot or two of lemon juice, and blend. Add that to the iced tea and then some water (to taste)…Thirst quenching and healthy. Just a whiff of this stuff will add three months to your life.

Cranberry juice is not only packed with anti-oxidants, it has properties that prevent a UTI. See this article that includes a recipe for a great health drink:http://factoidz.com/uti-prevention-remedy-for-children-and-adults/

What about milk? I could live on dairy alone. Sixty four ounces of water? I’ve drank sixty four ounces of milk in a day. I drink 2% milk 90% of the time. Not that it makes a huge difference, there is a good share of fat and cholesterol in milk and ice cream and cheese. I like to drink whey protein in my milk. I’ll have this as breakfast often. I have a favorite whey protein supplement, made by Body Fortress, I’ll be doing a Factoid on soon.

And don’t forget yogurt. You may not think of it as a drink, however, when you water it down with milk and juice, yogurt does become a great add in for a beverage…Everybody loves a smoothie! Yogurt is a super-food. Eat plenty of it. Or, drink it down!

I also like carbonated water. Here is some mixology I learned from an Indian restaurant owner: Add twelve splashes of Angostura Bitters to your sparkling water, and then drop in a slice of lemon. While you drink it, read all the medicinal properties of this good old tasty elixir. It’s right on the bottle the way it was written in the old days.

Speaking of carbonation: Beer…Good stuff! I like the heavy, high calorie beers…Lots of carbs! One of the benefits of having a job that causes you to be very physically active, is that you can enjoy food and drink without regard to calories…to an extent. I’ve even made a few delicious batches of my own beer. I rarely have more than two in a sitting, and I don’t drink beer every day. Wine is good for you too if you don’t over indulge. Remember, temperance is a virtue!

Keep up with a good fluid intake. Make sure your urine isn’t too yellow, and that you are peeing quite a few times a day, as in more than three or four times. The amount of fluids you need can really increase when you work in the heat. That fluid intake may need to be as much as two gallons sometimes. I hope this factoid inspired you to take in some additional nutrients with all that fluid.

good job on this Kevin! If I am very active I drink Gator Aid, because it has what the blood has in it. If I am not really active I just drink water.

excellent, but for the first time in my life I am actually starting to enjoy the rather plain taste of water.

Well done, Kevin. I'm glad that beer made your list because I have a frosty mug of Busch setting to the left of my keyboard right now :-)

What a refreshing change from all the fitness/nutrition articles that push water--everyone takes them so literally that they don't consider that everything with liquid in it is water. I don't know about those "thick" beers, though--I think they almost qualify as a breakfast cereal; and probably NOT the "Breakfast of Champions."

Great job Kevin, just reading this article makes me have to pee. I have a smoothie every weekday morning and drink peach iced tea faster than I can make it (is that possible) and there is nothing like a frosty mug of beer after an especially hot day at work. Aquatic intake is a must for kidney function and healthy living so why not add a splsh of flava.

Such an excellent article. Thanks, Kevin, for including all the ways we can drink water. Put me down as a mineral water-lover, especially of the fizzy kind. Thanks to you, I will search out the bitters to zip it up a bit. I enjoyed reading your advice and descriptions. Cheers!
