Sunstone is a sparkling and bright form of feldspar, closely related to moonstone, its name comes from the Greek words for sun, which is Helios and Litho, which means stone. The sunstone is a protective crystal that aids in increasing energy, strength, courage and willpower.

Ancient Sunstones

The ancient Vikings felt the sunstone was an exceptional crystal that enhanced their focus on life and their next life in Valhalla; it was a favorite crystal for making their various types of jewelry. They also made use of sunstone by placing it to rest with their loved ones who had past on into their eternal glory. Although, it is probable that the crystal they considered a sunstone was actually a crystal of Iolite, rather than the sunstone we know today. The ancient American natives enjoyed bartering and trading a glistening sunstone for all their needs, such as food, clothing, utensils as well as other trinkets.

Anciently, the sunstone related to various noble gods and goddesses who were beneficial in increasing prosperity and destiny. During the 16th century, a pope possessed a sunstone, which included an inclusion of gold, which seemed to align with the activity of the sun and would change from dawn until dusk. In 1987, the state of Oregon declared the sunstone as being their authentic state crystal or gemstone.

Shades and Tones of Sunstone

Sunstone features various colors, such as transparent of yellow, pinks, peaches and orange as well as splendid colors of reds, blues, greens, browns and gray. Sunstones offer a sparkly pattern of flashing light reflections, while some of these crystals may display profoundly deep colors with various colors of halos within that provides a display of various other colors when viewed at different points of view.

Sunstone Properties

Sunstones are a delightful crystal that has the ability to encourage good spirits, confidence, insight and vitality. It is also is useful for developing and reinforcing the levels of energy necessary when facing situations that bring about nervousness, by transforming the feelings of hopelessness into optimism and confidence, while overcoming the desire to postpone any issues or duties.

Sunstone aids in clearing, balancing and enlivening the chakras, by aiding flushing out all the negative blockages, while increasing the feelings of energy and love in a positive manner. It has the ability to bring strength and vigor, by easing the various feelings of stress, depression and fear. Sunstone is a crystal that has an affinity to those born under the astrological signs of Libra and Leo, while making an exceptional stone of luck and endurance for those who enjoy athletics. It is also a useful crystal for stimulating the increase of sexual energy and arousal as well as spiritual growth.
