"Take It" Gives permission to have something, when they pay attention to you.
Part 1: Put a treat in your closed fist. Put it approximately 2 to 3 inches from your dog’s nose, if they lick and paw at it, hold your ground, don’t play "keep away" with it, meaning don’t pull it away from them towards you, this may cause the dog to lunge at you. If they bite you make a wounded puppy sound, a "yip" or "yelp" and, as soon as your dog looks away or backs off your fist, click (see the factoid on using a clicker) or say "yes" open your hand, palm up and say, "Take It". Every dog has a different sign of avoidance, some look down, some left or right and some just back off your closed fist and stare at it. Pay attention and watch what your dog does, and mark it with a clicker or yes, say "Take it" and let them have the treat on your open palm, don’t shove this in their mouth. Keep practicing until they don’t go after your hand any more and just look at it. Some dogs respond to different tones, you have to find your dogs level. A high pitch squeal can get a dog to go after your hand even more, they might need a lower level grunt type of yip, like some men can’t yip at a higher level so a BAA! type will have to do.
Part 2: After they just look at your fist and no longer go after your hand, see if they will look at you, by delaying response to them, if they don’t know to look at you, DO NOT SAY THEIR NAME, make a little noise, like kiss sound or click of your tongue or blow on the top of their head, when they make eye contact mark it, (Click or say Yes) and open your hand at the same time saying "Take It".
Keep doing this until eventually your dog will just look at your fist and look at you without going after it any more.
Part 3: When they don’t go after your closed hand and look at you instead, it’s time for step 3.
Hold the treat on your open palm near them, within 4-5 inches, if they try to lunge or go for the treat quickly close your hand and say "uh-Uh’ do not draw your hand back towards you, this again can invite lunging, when they back off, open your hand, and wait for them to look at you, if they don’t, make a kissy noise or blow on their head. When they look at you mark it, say "yes " or click and say "take it".
Any time they go for your hand with the treat sitting on it, close your hand and say "Uh-Uh". You are waiting for them to ask for permission (eye contact) to take treat, when they stop going for the open hand and look at you instead, Mark it and say "take It". Pretty soon you can have it on your open palm and they will look at you for permission..
If you run a cross anything they can have, like say you dropped a treat on the floor, if they go after it say Uh-Uh and if they look at you, you decide if they can "take it" or not. If not pick it up off the floor or detour around it, if you’re on a walk. You can say Leave it if you don’t want them having it, but you must teach them leave it, See the Factoid on this cue.
You can then practice with all kinds of different things, use take it for the release to eat their food, take a toy, as long as they give you eye contact.
