The internet is a vast repository of information. It is also a vast repository of the silly things people do. Here is a list of some of the best blogs on the internet for cataloguing human mistakes.
But on a more serious level, these are all good examples on how to run a blog. None of them catalogue the dull, day to day lives of a single person: they all pick a single theme and stick with it. Provide frequent updates and usually some snarky commentary. They provide a service - collecting funny things according to their chosen theme, and for that, they have a certain reliable readership.
There I Fixed It http://thereifixedit.com/ : the online catalogue of people who honestly tried to fix broken things. They simply did not try hard enough. Highlights include car repairs done with cardboard and masking tape, the scotch tape dispenser repaired with … scotch tape and a pencil, and the Laz-e-boy based motorized wheelchair.
Lovely Listing http://lovelylisting.com/ : There is a certain art to taking an appealing real estate listing photo. You have to find the right angle to show off the space in the best possible way. Lovely Listing is dedicated to the people who have no grasp of this art. It is also partially dedicated to finding some of the worst interior design work in the world, i.e. plaid walls, and contains a running gag about a certain, ubiquitous, white plastic lawn chair that everybody in the world seems to own.
You Suck at Craigslist http://www.yousuckatcraigslist.com/ : My own fondness for Craigslist has been well documented. This site is dedicated to the worst of the worst of Craigslist ads. One of my favourite parts is the general public’s utter inability to spell the word Provencial as in French Provencial furniture. It gets spelled preventional, prudential, prevential, pervential and proncial. There are people with really odd romantic proclivities, incidences of people missing the second “p” in the word “rapper”, and lots and lots of spelling errors.
The Customer is Not Always Right http://notalwaysright.com/ : A collection of actual conversations had between people in the service industry and the people they serve. The insane, dumb, and insanely dumb people they serve. If you have ever worked in the service industry, this will bring back not so fond memories, as well as more than a few laughs.
Photoshop Disasters http://photoshopdisasters.blogspot.com/ : Photoshop is a reality of modern life. Most of the images you see on magazine covers, newspapers, and ads have been put through Photoshop. And as with anything, some people are good at Photoshop, and some people are really really bad at it. Photoshop Disasters is dedicated to the people who aren’t very good at photoshop (because a blog dedicated to good Photoshopping wouldn’t be as funny. People with missing or stubby arms, women with no belly-buttons, and disembodied hands all abound on this site.
Shoebox Blog: http://www.shoeboxblog.com/ : Shoebox is actually a subsidiary of Hallmark that focusses on humour based greeting cards. So, basically, it’s a blog - a medium based on short, quick bursts of humour - from professional greeting card writers. Greeting cards also being a medium focused on short, quick bursts of humour. Their best feature (to me) is the “Space Butter 3000” video features. These are essentially Star Trek, but with all the actors replaced with sticks of butter. They fight against the evil egg empire.
