You don’t see too many people working out the old way anymore. You go to the gym and you see guys and gals all decked out in their exercise clothes, and they are working on the more sophisticated high tech equipment. No matter how unpopular the heavy bag is these days, it is still a great way to work out and develop your muscles. Oh, and I should mention that the bag is a great way to work off stress and tension. Is there someone you’d love to pound the crap out of? If so, hit the bag instead. It’ll keep you out of the slammer.
The heavy bag weighs about 100 pounds; some bags weigh about half that. The bag is made of vinyl or leather, and it is stuffed with a heavy material. You can use the free standing bags, or the hanging heavy bags. The heavy bags are used by boxers, and men and women training for the martial arts. The heavy bag is also great to practice your kicks. The heavy bag will wear you out, but you will build up your entire body using the heavy bags.
A training session on the heavy bag should be for a period of two minute intervals. As you train work up your intensity as high as you can. You will be breathing hard, because your muscles are demanding more oxygen. This is what makes this exercise an aerobic workout. You will develop your upper body, including your shoulders and arms. With your kicks you will be working your lower body. Move around the bag as you attack it. You will be tired out after 2 minutes, but you may also be able to work up to 3 minutes of high intensity bag workout.
Heavy bag training is good exercise. It not only gives you power, but it also trains you in case you are ever in a position to defend yourself, should you be attacked. This kind of heavy training is also good for your mental and emotional state of mind. You feel good all over when you work your whole body.
Pretend you are boxing the bag. Move your body, and mix up your punches and jabs. Mixing it up works the chest, and your shoulders, and at the same time you are strengthening your back muscles. The right cross and the jab develops the chest and shoulders. The hooks and uppercuts develop the back muscles and the arms. Have fun!
