Ever found your computer to be slow, or perhaps not load as fast as it once did when you bought it? It’s probably not because your computer is filled with viruses and the like, but it’s probably clogged up with all the stuff you install, whether it’s a new video game like Lord of the Rings Online, or perhaps a firewall like Norton Anti-Virus. Cleaning your computer or laptop’s hard drive may seem daunting, but isn’t as hard as it may look. With this guide, your computer will be quicker, faster and will be more efficient overall.
Requirements:
You need access to the Internet so you can see this article and download necessary software (obviously, to be honest).
Must have BASIC knowledge of using a computer (like opening documents, using programs, et cetera).
Tips:
*1 Close any programs that are open, except the Internet so you can still look at the instructions while you do them.
*2 Look on your “My Programs” list. ARE THERE ANY PROGRAMS THAT YOU DO NOT USE? Uninstall them! This usually gives you a great deal of free space.
Warning: DO NOT UNINSTALL IMPORTANT SOFTWARE LIKE YOUR FIREWALL OR YOU WILL BE AT RISK OF VIRUSES AND OTHER POTENTIALLY HARMFUL SPYWARE.
*3 If you want, you can download Crap Cleaner www.ccleaner.com. This software deletes the junk lying around on your computer. Once you (successfully) manage to download the installer and install the program, run the software and tick everything except the “.dat files” on Internet Explorer and the “Old Prefetch Data” on Advanced. This should give you BAGS of free space (essentially about 5GB+).
*4 Check out your “My Documents” area. Any files you don’t want, or pictures, music or video files you don’t really need anymore? Just delete them. It may only seem about 1 megabyte more space, but it WILL help. Trust me!
[[OPTIONAL]] Need to get more space for photos? Use an external USB hard drive! There’s plenty around up for the right prices and you can back up your pictures on your USB if your computer ever needs reformatting.
*5 Copy the URL (the website address on the top bar) and download ‘Mozilla Firefox’. If you are currently using Internet Explorer, Mozilla is a faster browser. As well as this, it’s a lot safer and you don’t have to wait for your download because you can’t click anything else apart from the download window on your browser. Then open Mozilla Firefox and paste the link into your browser address bar so you can keep this open.
*6 If you still find your computer to be slow, then chances are it’s probably clogged up with viruses, spyware and a lot of other things. I recommend using this - The 8 Steps to Cleaning Your Computer (http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic58138.html) can save your computer from a life or death situation (well, not your life anyway!). The link is GUARANTEED to make your computer faster (virus-proof at least anyway, if you follow the instructions correctly). The link involves you downloading software like MalwareBytes and Windows Defender. (Don’t worry, I’ve followed this guide myself and it works perfectly).
Other Tips:
Try not to install anything that looks REMOTELY suspicious, otherwise your computer could end up needing a reformat.
Warning: This will take a lot of time if you follow all of these tips.
I hope your computer becomes faster at the end of this. Thanks for reading!
