Tips for Finding and Hiring a Home Improvement Contractor

Home improvement projects can be a rewarding way to customize you living space and also add value to your home. There are a few steps you can take to assure your project doesn’t turn into a nightmare. Basic skills are required for most projects. The most important is knowing when to ask for help. Some mechanical ablility will also come in handy. Evalutate you desired project carefully, plan well and you will have a successful home improvement project

The first and probably the most important step in any project is planning. Often times my wife and I will sit in the area the project will be in and brainstorm what we want to get out of the project. Our taste and ideas are very different, however we usually reach a decision that will make both of us happy with the results. Good planning will make your project go smoother than if you just jumped in blind. Use this step to make out a game plan on where you want to go with this project. Make this plan a firm plan but don’t set it in stone, you will change it a little to fit the unexpected.

Figure out your budget next, decide what elements are important and list them out on paper in the order they are important. We usually list them in order from “can’t live without” to “won’t miss it at all”. There are many places to get good quality remodeling supplies at a price that will be in your range. Using the internet and salvage yards is a great way to save money.

Once you figure out what you want to do and how you are going to do it, sketch out a schedule or timeline for your project. Set realistic time frames or you may get discouraged when it seems you won’t make it on time. Everyone works at a different skill level and pace, so set yours up according to what you feel is acceptable.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Seek out help from professionals or experienced people on the parts you are unable to do or need some knowledge on doing. In the planning and budget phase, figure out if you need to hire any part of the project to a contractor. Most building supply stores will offer free classes on different aspects of home improvement. Take advantage of the programs that are offered, they give a good fundamental knowledge of the project.

Getting the right tools for the job is crucial to success of your project. A few hand tools are necessary to most jobs such as hammers, screwdrivers, pry bars, the list goes on.

If you need specialized tools check with the local hardware or home improvement store to see if they rent the tools you need, this is usually much more cost effective than buying the tool for a one time use.

After all that is done, shop around look for the deals and take advantages of discounts that you find. Enjoy your project and just keep in mind that it will be perfect when you are done.
