Drawing is a fulfilling, relaxing and enjoyable pasttime. Although you might not know how to draw, it is easy to learn- if you have the right tools and ambition. I can’t give you the ambition, but I can certainly give you advice on how to start!
First things first- you need to make sure you have the right tools. Pencils are best for beginners- they are easy to work with, and you can always erase. HB pencils are good for details, small things that would be harder to draw with a softer lead, like jewelry and eyelashes. Softer- leaded pencils are good for shading and filling in larger areas. Make sure to always have erasers on hand- buy soft erasers, they work better than harder erasers. Unfortunately, you will have to work harder to control where you are erasing so you don’t erase anything that wasn’t intended.
Next, you need paper. You can draw on just about any paper, all with different results. The smoother papers, like computer paper, makes nice smooth pencil lines. These are the best for beginners and for highly detailed drawings. Rougher, heavier papers are good for softer lead pencils. In all, you have to experiment to find out what you like best. I prefer computer paper myself, as it is cheap and suits my needs.
To start drawing, you need to pick a subject- weather it is from your mind or something in front of you. You need to pick out specific shapes within the subject, and draw them in proportion to what you see. Proportion is very crucial to drawing anything, so studying it early on is a great way to be on top of your game.
A great way to start is to pick some plant life- flowers are great subjects. Plus, they pretty much consist of circles! Just add in details, and you’re good to go. Always make sure you are comfortable in your surroundings, as it will make drawing so much more painless. In the end, just find your own style and roll with it! Because, hey, it’s art- you can never be wrong.
