A popular custom that dates very far back in history, is that of the wedding veil. To veil or not to veil? That is the question.
There are many reasons to wear a veil and here are some of them:
A veil is traditional, it really makes a bride look like a bride. You can borrow a veil from your mother, grandmother or even a friend. This can be your "something borrowed." A veil holds many different meanings depending on the type and how you wear it. Some brides opt to have the veil over their face as they walk down the aisle. It is then pulled back before she is greeted by her husband-to-be. This tradition dates far back and is said to mean many different things. For example, in an arranged marriage, a veil would be used to cover up the bride’s face just in case the groom was not satisfied with her appearance. It has also been said, that a veil wards off evil spirits and protects the bride. Some cultures believe a woman’s face should be covered and only seen by her husband. Simply put, though, wearing a veil on your wedding day is a form of tradition. If you have the need to follow custom and tradition, then a veil is the way to go!
There are also some reasons why a bride may decide not to wear a veil, and here they are:
First and foremost, a veil can get in the way. Remember you will be running around, dancing, mingling, etc. and you don’t want your veil to get caught on someone’s jewelry or if it’s really long, stepped on by a guest. Also, if you are looking for a non-traditional wedding, then you would probably feel more comfortable not wearing a veil. Be yourself! Put a flower or feather in your hair! There are many ways to express yourself other than wearing a wedding veil.
Or the third option is to wear a veil for part of the wedding and take it off at the reception! You can wear it down the aisle and for pictures and then, poof! Off it goes! This will help the type of bride who would like to partake in some traditional wedding aspects, but wants to let loose at the reception.
Remember, this is your day! You can do whatever you want, however you want. Veil or no veil, that’s not what a wedding is all about. A wedding is about friends and family. It’s about unity and love. It’s about making a committment to the person you cherish most in this world. It’s about looking and feeling your best, with our without a veil.
