When visiting Chattanooga many people like to visit the downtown area. The primary attraction is the magnificent Tennessee Aquarium. This attraction is so big that it takes up two buildings. There is a convenient parking lot right next door. Plan to spend up to 1.5 hours to 2 hours per building. It’s educational and something that the whole family can enjoy. The best time to go to the Tennessee Aquarium is as soon as the doors open. If you go later in the day many of the animals (such as the otters) will be curled up in their dens asleep. While you are in downtown Chattanooga be sure to go to the Visitor Center. This is right next door to the aquarium. They are a treasure chest of information. The staff is friendly and down-to-earth. They can help you with maps, brochures and tips to help you make the most of your getaway.

Visit the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Holiday Inn. Rediscover history with a visit to the old train depot. Stroll through the gardens. The Christmas decorations are usually minimal but effective. There is no charge to visit the gardens and shopping area. Most stores usually close by 6:00 pm in the winter months. Call ahead if there is a particular shop that you want to visit.

When you’re finished shopping at the Choo-Choo you might want to take in a movie. In the downtown area the theater to go to is the Carmike Bijou 7. This modern theater features stadium seating, friendly employees and current movies. It is conveniently located on Broad Street.

Getting around:
Getting around in downtown Chattanooga is easy. The best way is to either park in the large parking garage by the Bijou 7 or at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. From either of these locations you can catch a ride on the free shuttle. Pick up a schedule at the Chattanooga Visitor Center or Shuttle Depot.
