Knoxville, Tennessee It's more than UT Vols Football

The holidays are coming. Many families like to get together and go away over a holiday weekend to reconnect. If you are looking for a weekend getaway, downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee may be the perfect destination. My family and I live just over an hour away. We travel to Chattanooga often. Prices for motels and attractions are reasonable. There is a wide array of restaurants in every price range. Plus, the town has lots of activities for kids.

The trick to getting the best deals in Chattanooga (or anywhere) is to book in advance. This is especially true if you are traveling over a holiday. The best motels and the hottest locations fill up the fastest. As soon as you decide what you want to do it’s time to reserve your room and make your plans.

If you aren’t sure what there is to do over Thanksgiving weekend in Chattanooga this list will get you started.

Weekend in Chattanooga, TN Idea #1

When visiting Chattanooga many people like to visit the downtown area. The primary attraction is the magnificent Tennessee Aquarium. This attraction is so big that it takes up two buildings. There is a convenient parking lot right next door. Plan to spend up to 1.5 hours to 2 hours per building. It’s educational and something that the whole family can enjoy. The best time to go to the Tennessee Aquarium is as soon as the doors open. If you go later in the day many of the animals (such as the otters) will be curled up in their dens asleep. Yes, there are viewing panels but viewing them asleep is not the same as watching them in their recreated habitat. Click here to find out about hours and pricing.

Weekend in Chattanooga, TN Idea #2

While you are in downtown Chattanooga be sure to go to the Visitor Center. This is right next door to the aquarium. They are a treasure chest of information. The staff is friendly and down-to-earth. They can help you with maps, brochures and tips to help you make the most of your getaway.

Weekend in Chattanooga, TN Idea #3

Visit the Chattanooga Choo-Choo Holiday Inn. Rediscover history with a visit to the old train depot. Stroll through the gardens. The Christmas decorations are usually minimal but effective. There is no charge to visit the gardens and shopping area. Most stores usually close by 6:00 pm in the winter months. Call ahead if there is a particular shop that you want to visit.

One fun activity at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo is the Model Railroad Museum. Train engineer wanna-bes and children of all ages will enjoy seeing the display. Over 50,000 man hours went into the creation of the exhibit. Click here for pricing and more information.

Weekend in Chattanooga, TN Idea #4

When  you’re finished shopping at the Choo-Choo you might want to take in a movie. In the downtown area the theater to go to is the Carmike Bijou 7. This modern theater features stadium seating, friendly employees and current movies. It is conveniently located on Broad Street.

Weekend in Chattanooga, TN Idea #5

Restaurants are plentiful in the downtown Chattanooga area. You can find something for every taste and budget. Choose from the food court at the Tennessee Aquarium to a dinner mystery theater, family and fine dining experiences. Click here to explore downtown Chattanooga restaurants.

Getting around:

Getting around in downtown Chattanooga is easy. The best way is to either park in the large parking garage by the Bijou 7 or at the Chattanooga Choo-Choo. From either of these locations you can catch a ride on the free shuttle. Pick up a schedule at the Chattanooga Visitor Center or Shuttle Depot.
