Backyard project: add a patio to your garden

Everyone will agree that an open patio provides a closeness to nature and allows one to admire the surrounding landscape.  A great many of us now spend a considerable time outside. The present economic times have now created a situation where we have come to appreciate our outdoors more. For many of us, our garden and patio are we spend more time than anywhere else in the house. This is where families gather, eat, barbecue, swim, relax and enjoy nature. There is no better feeling than lying down on a lazy chair, reading a book, sipping wine and just enjoying the sun.

However, there are times (like very sunny days) when the patio could be more enjoyable if it had a cover. There are various types of patio covers available today. Some are permanent, others are temporary, some can be unhinged and others can be slid over. Patio covers also come in various materials, colors, sizes and styles. Some are wooden or aluminum, others are simple fabrics and others are made of Plexiglass.

Some patio covers are decorative, others provide cover from the weather and others may help you divide the landscape into compartments. A patio cover can also be an extension of a house, a garden or the poolside.

A covered patio also allows one to simply enjoy and relax but in a different atmosphere. The primary reason one wants the patio covered is to avoid the weather. Too much sun, wind, rain, cold or dust can easily ruin a nice summer day. So it is essential that one has a cover for the patio. In the summer, if there are insects or mosquitoes, one can even place a net as a cover and yet allow the air to circulate. Sometimes, the patio cover can afford a romantic get together at night. If one wants privacy out on a patio, there is nothing better than a portable patio cover. A screen made of bamboo shoots provides intimacy in an exotic environment.

While the majority of patio covers are built of some type of material, one can also change the style of the covering. If the landscape allows, one can add plants, ferns, sago palms or place large containers filled with greenery to act as covers. This not only enhances the beauty of the patio but allows one to enjoy nature.

A patio cover can also help increase the resale value of the house.

The majority of patio covers can be relatively easily installed. For those who have no experience with installment, there are plenty of professionals who can do the job for you. For those who are handy with their hands, there are a number of “Do it yourself kits” which come with all the materials, manual and equipment to install a patio.

While having a patio cover is great, one should remember that almost all patio covers require some degree of maintenance. Wooden covers need to be annually polished and plexi-glass may need frequent rises with water.

If you are simply too lazy to clean after a hard day’s work, then aluminum patio covers are ideal. These hardly require any maintenance and yet remain durable and sturdy for years

The great thing about patio covers is that it allows you to enjoy your outdoors all year round irrespective of the weather. Patio covers allow you to control your outdoors and not Mother Nature.

In the end, the selection of a patio cover is entirely personal and dependent on your life style. But no matter what you choose, the patio cover will allow you to enjoy the outdoors more fully and freely all year around.
