Can Bratz dolls be a positive influence on young girls?
by Maritza Manresa

3 Short Answers

I have a 4 year old girl and have that same question myself. While my exposure has been limited, I haven't seen anything negative in dialogue, etc., the overall style of the Bratz Girlz is a little more than I feel comfortable with for such a young child. Ultimately, I can't shake the feeling that my preschooler is getting a little dose of Britney...a little too soon.

P.S. Video was a gift from an out-of-the-loop family member.

I would have to say yes, they are inappropriate.

Just because of the fact that they are wearing immense amounts of make up and very suggestive clothing. Some may say that "Barbie" is the same thing, but I tend to think that Barbie is a little more classy then these Bratz dolls. They are so blatantly suggestive and extremely sexual, they look like hookers. The toys and shows your children are exposed to are what they will be looking to as role models. I would say if you were fine with your children wearing the clothes and makeup that the Bratz wear then you should feel fine with them owning these dolls. I have seen the show and it promotes good morals and such, and they don't act like hookers, but this image of these dolls is what our children will idolize. Do you want your daughter daydreaming and wishing she could dress like her doll? I don't know about others out there, but as a young girl myself I always wanted to dress in the fashions I saw on the television and I was depressed that most of the time I couldn't, and I didn't understand how it was inappropriate. Ultimately its up to you and what you think is appropriate. Who knows, maybe in another 20 years this will be what our 4 year olds are wearing...

I was not impressed with the line of Bratz dolls since their introduction to the market. Perhaps my opinion of them lessened a little since watching the movie, since the characters had good motives - yet they still lacked common sense and were too materialistic for my taste. I for one don't want my little girl being immersed in wanting, wanting, and wanting! Not that I think Barbie dolls are the answer either, because they do not represent young girls' bodies. If you're interested, you can read a little something I wrote on this subject elsewhere: http://www.helium.com/items/1225503-dolls-for-children.">http://www.helium.com/items/1225503-dolls-for-children. Please forgive some typos I had on there (I wrote it late one night!), but I will be cleaning it up. :-)
