What happened before the Big Bang?

I would personally say that the answer to this is 42, and before you scoff at this, allow me to explain myself. There was no such thing as matter as opposed to anti-matter at the time, for everything coincided with itself. To know what that in-between element in the beginning was would truly be the answer to life (42, as phrased in the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy, although many more people have taken up the meaning).
