Two ways:
First is eat smaller meals, more frequently. Most people find this hard to do, but if you can eat 5 times a day, you're body will always know food is near and burn it efficiently. How many times are you ravenously hungry before you get home to make dinner? Carry an apple or a snack-sized bar for eating between meals (SoyJoy, etc.).
Second is strength train. Muscle uses up a lot more calories than fat does. If you increase your muscle size by a few pounds, you'll burn a lot more calories. Of course strength training also burns calories, but AT REST muscles burn more calories than fat does. Most people focus on their biceps or calves, but the bigger muscles of your abdomin are the easiest to strengthen and have burn lots of calories. Strengthen your core and your metabolism will increase.
I would like to add that you should eat within an hour of getting up. This will give your metabolism a jump start.
Watch your white stuff, flour and sugar. They give you a quick burst of energy but will send you crashing fast. You want that slow and steady burn that protein, fiber and whole grains give you.
