Beer: The Fat and Skinny Side of What You Drink
by Cassandra LHeureux

Beer tends to follow a simple principle for this:

1. The darker and more breadlike a beer, the higher it's calorie and carb count will be.

Thus, Guinness is the most well known stout (the most common name for the darkest/strongest beer) is reletively high on the calorie scale- Guinness draught has 220 calories.

Where something I'd call "pisswater" (IE: Less like beer, more like water), can have really low calorie/carb counts.

It's also good to remember that beer is, in fact, liquid bread. The closer it is to bread (Usually the darker it is), the higher the calorie count will be. I would also argue it has a better chance of tasting better, but that's really a personal preference.

The moral of the story? Don't sacrifice flavor for calories. If you really want to drink with great taste and keep the calories low... drink whiskey. Averaging at 52 calories a shot, without any carbs Whiskey simply outperforms light beer in being healthy.

Disclaimer: When you get down to it, I'm a liquor person not a beer person. When I drink beer, I drink stout. I just make a point to not drink a six pack of it and get my calories for 3 days at once.

The darker the higher the calories is a good general rule. Pale Ale's and Lagers are the way to go if you are counting calories.
