How Obesity Can Lead to Diabetes and Ways to Prevent it

Diabetes is one of the leading causes of death today. This disease, sometimes associated with diets high in carbs, causes a rise in blood glucose levels which can in turn cause many other problems. One type
of diabetes, called adult onset diabetes or type 2 diabetes, is of particular concern in the US today. Cases of adult onset diabetes are increasing quickly, and this disease is linked to the epidemic of obesity. There is good news, however: by maintaining a healthy weight, eating right, and getting some exercise, most non insulin dependent patients can reduce or eliminate their diabetes symptoms.

There are many causes of insulin deficiency, including the body not producing enough, viral infections, reactions to toxic chemicals, and some types of autoimmune disease. Type 2 diabetes is caused because the body becomes resistant to the effects of the hormone insulin. This causes a person’s blood sugar to be abnormally high or fluctuate in an unhealthy manner. Symptoms of diabetes include increased appetite, blurry vision or other vision trouble, frequent urination, increased thirst, slow healing infections, and fatigue. If you suspect that you might have diabetes, make sure you visit your doctor. It is easy to test for diabetes, and the results may save your life.

Diabetes can cause many complications for its sufferers: blindness, stroke, heart disease, and even organ failure. Diabetes is hereditary, so if you have a family history of diabetes you could be more likely to get it.

Since diabetes can cause so many health problems, it’s important for diabetics to control diabetes to the extent possible. This can be done by eating healthy and exercising. Watching what you eat is one of the most important ways to keep diabetes under control. Doctors recommend sticking to a special diabetic menu and ensuring that your diet is balanced and nutritious. Be sure to talk to a health care professional who can make recommendations for your special circumstances. Foods NOT to eat include soda, candy, and junk food. Pasta, white bread, and other carbs can be okay, but eat them in moderation. Eating too much of these products can be bad for you.

A diabetes meter is an important part of the daily routine for many diabetics. This is a small device which tells you what your blood sugar is. Your doctor will tell you how to use it to monitor your glucose levels to make sure they stay within normal ranges.

Adult onset diabetes is a growing problem in North America, but with a little knowledge it can be treated easily. Diabetics must take care of themselves to ensure they have a high quality of life. Diet and exercise are the two most important factors in keeping healthy.
