Using a menstrual cup instead of tampons: be eco-friendly while saving money

Why is anybody using trash bags?

We can still think green and environmentally friendly even on those days of the month when we, as women, don’t necessarily feel friendly toward anyone or anything, especially not our planet.  By using a Diva cup or another brand of a menstrual cup, you can save money and the environment as well.

A menstrual cup is a flexible silicon cup that fits inside a woman during her monthly cycle much like a tampon.  But, instead of absorbing the monthly discharge, it collects it inside the cup.  The cup sits at the lower base of the vaginal canal. It is worn internally, yet because it is soft and smooth, it cannot be felt nor will it leak when inserted properly.  Though, on occasion during clotting, some leakage can occur.  The woman simply empties the cup when it becomes full (depending on the day of the month, this could be quite often or a long-time in between.  Typically, a woman loses approx. between 2-4 oz. of blood a month during her cycle.  The Diva cup, for instance, holds 1/2 oz.  So, you can usually go a few hours between emptying.  It can safely be worn for up to 12 hours at a time.

There are two models.  One for a woman 30 years old and over and/or for all women who have had vaginal childbirth or c-section and one for young women who have not yet had babies.

A menstrual cup is the most clean and convenient method of feminine hygiene protection. Some are different, but the Diva Cup is worn low in the vagina, not near the cervix, so it is easy to remove.

Any menstrual cup ends hassles with unreliable disposables with their endless absorbencies, shapes and styles. A menstrual cup is perfect for all activities even gymnastics, dancing or swimming – giving women true freedom without the worry, guessing and unreliability that disposable feminine hygiene products can bring.  On your heavier days, if you want to be extra secure, you can still wear a pad, or even an environmentally friendly cloth pad that can be found numerous places online with a menstrual cup.

Since a menstrual cup is reusable, it is extremely economical.  When you use a menstrual cup, you can be certain that you are contributing to environmental conservation. Landfill and pollution problems continue to haunt our world, and by using this reusable menstrual cup, you will save not only the environment, but a ton of money on monthly purchases of tampons as well!  The typical price of a menstrual cup can range between approximately $20.00-$40.00.  So, you begin to see your savings within a few months.

Aside from being green and saving out environment and also money, you can be sure that you are never caught off guard with a menstrual cup.  If you carry it with you in the carry-bag that comes as part of the purchase, you are always ready to make sure you don’t experience unexpected accidents.

Another benefit is that you can measure your monthly flow.  This might sound unappealing, but if you are concerned about certain medical problems, you can know exactly if your flow has increased or decreased dramatically from month to month as the cup has measuring lines of 1/4 & 1/2 oz. increments.

It is overall clean; though when emptying it, it can be a bit messy - so is tampon use.  The risk of toxic shock syndrome is not associated with the use of menstrual cups as it has been with the use of tampons.  There is nothing to throw away in bathroom trash cans, just flush the contents down the toilet.  And, the leakage is extremely reduced by using a menstrual cup.

You have nothing to lose by trying a menstrual cup.  Chances are you will learn to love it!  If you don’t, then go back to your preferred method knowing you have made an attempt at keeping our environment and landfills a little cleaner.
