In these times of financial upheaval Many people are losing their jobs. Unemployment rates are on the rise. However, there is one industry that is stable and lucrative during these trying times. The funeral industry. This industry overs a wide variety of positions to those who are looking for stable employment.The most obvious position is Funeral Director. Two years Formal education is required. The course is geared towards public relations and the business aspects of operating a funeral home. Most states require applicants to be 21 years old, serve a 1-year apprenticeship, and pass an examination.
Next is Pre-need Sales Counselor, or Advanced Planning counselor
The sales counselor will meet with people to discuss the advantages of making "pre-need funeral arraignment and assist them in making the right selections for their personal and financial situation. This position is generally a commission only position. Often no experience is required and the employer provides training. This can be a very lucrative position for anyone with a sales background or experience in customer service. You must be self motivated and willing to work at the convenience of your potential customers.

This is a physically demanding position that requires the ability to work with a variety of grounds maintenance equipment. Most facilities require that you be eighteen years old and have a valid drivers license.
Of course, just like with any business there are a variety of administrative and clerical positions at the larger facilities. Most smaller funeral homes tend to be family owned and operated.
Now, the most difficult position. The Embalmer.
Those who choose be an embalmer will need to be able to face the challenges of many types of cases . It is not glamorous and requires hard work. Embalmers do not get to pick and choose what kind of cases they will work on. You must be willing to put in whatever time is necessary for each case and have a sense of desire to put forth your best effort. They are required to take at least 2 years and sometimes more of education at a mortuary college. This is a position for those who are not squeamish and works out well for those with an interest in physiology and anatomy.
There are many opportunities in the funeral Industry for those who are willing to move out of their comfort zone in pursuit of a stable, well paying career. Don’t say no until you’ve checked it out.
